TikTok data breach denial overview:

  • Who: TikTok has denied claims by the hacking group AgainstTheWest that its servers were breached and user data and source code stolen.
  • Why: TikTok argues it has adequate security measures in place to prevent any direct scraping of user data from its platform.
  • Where: TikTok is used by consumers nationwide.

TikTok denies a hacking group’s claims that it was able to steal source code and user data from the video hosting service.

The hacking group, “AgainstTheWest,” claimed on a hacking forum last week that it had successfully breached both TikTok and WeChat, a Chinese instant messaging, social media and mobile payment app, BleepingComputer reports

AgainstTheWest shared a screenshot on the hacking forum on Friday of what it claimed to be a database for the companies.

The threat actor asserted that the server it purports to have breached contains more than 2 billion records of user data, platform statistics, cookies, software code, server info, auth tokens and more in a 790gb database, according to BleepingComputer.

TikTok, however, reportedly denied that it was victimized in a data breach and said that the source code shared on the hacking forum is not from its platform.

TikTok data breach assertions ‘incorrect claim,’ company says

“This is an incorrect claim — our security team investigated this statement and determined that the code in question is completely unrelated to TikTok’s backend source code, which has never been merged with WeChat data,” the company says in a statement to BleepingComputer.

TikTok reportedly further contended that it could not have been victimized by this particular alleged data breach due to it having adequate security safeguards in place to prevent a direct scrape of user data from its platform.

AgainstTheWest is a hacking group that purports to target countries and companies that are hostile to the interests of Western countries, BleepingComputer reports.

TikTok also took to social media on Monday to clear the air about the alleged TikTok data breach, reassuring its users in a Tweet that “TikTok prioritizes the privacy and security of our users’ data. Our security team investigated these claims and found no evidence of a security breach.”

In related TikTok news, last month, an Illinois federal judge gave the final OK to a $92 million class action settlement between TikTok and a class of users that claimed the company misused their biometric information.

Also last month, a tech researcher published research purporting to show that TikTok — along with Meta, Instagram and Facebook — are able to track individuals who use their in-app browsers.
