Mr. Cooper lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Mr. Cooper is facing a class action lawsuit after a data breach that impacted 14.6 million customers’ personal information.
  • Why: Mr. Cooper did not do enough to protect customers’ data and is therefore responsible for allowing that data to be nefariously accessed, the Mr. Cooper lawsuit claims.
  • Where: The Mr. Cooper lawsuit was filed in federal court in Dallas, Texas.

Mr. Cooper is facing a class action lawsuit claiming that it did not provide the proper protection to avoid a data breach that impacted 14.6 million customers’ personal information.

It is the second class action lawsuit accusing the mortgage corporation of not doing enough to protect the personally identifiable information (PII) of its customers in another recent class action lawsuit.

The data breach involved customers’ names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and bank account numbers being accessed.

“Defendants claim that ‘[k]eeping financial information is one of [their] most important responsibilities[,]’ and ‘customer service, trust and confidence is a high priority,’ the new Mr. Cooper lawsuit says. “Despite these outward assurances, Defendants failed to adequately safeguard plaintiff’s and class members’ highly sensitive private information that it collected and maintained.”

Data thieves have information to wreak havoc on Mr. Cooper customers

Enough information was stolen that the data thieves could fraudulently open new financial accounts, take out loans, obtain medical services, gain government benefits or file fraudulent tax returns, the new Mr. Cooper lawsuit claims.

Even the class members who have not yet been subjected to identity theft are at an “an immediate and heightened risk of all manners of identity theft,” the Mr. Cooper lawsuit claims.

The class has claimed Mr. Cooper is guilty of negligence, breach of implied contract, was unjustly enriched and breached its fiduciary duty.

  1. George says:

I cannot allow Mr Cooper to hand my contact details over to the court/class action settlement administrator. I will take action to prevent it, even if that means traveling to Lewisville, TX to physically block the transfer. This class action nonsense needs to stop. It serves no useful function. It only benefits the lawyers, and those who administrate the case.

I am interested in joining the class action lawsuit, I received noticed from Mr. Cooper a few months ago advising me to keep a watch on my credit record due to their failure. They need to be barred from doing business, they can be considered a predatory lender, my loan was sold to them, so they were not my choice.

  7. Johnnie says:

If there’s a class action lawsuit, I want in. How does a multibillion dollar company struggle with PII and PCI compliance?

This data bridge has dramatically affected my family. Not only did they mention that my mortgage was paid in full and I knew that it was not I was not allowed to make a payment on my account because of this error. Then I receive an encrypted email regarding a response from them on their data breach and they sent me someone else’s information. So now I have another mortgages policy number claim number and home address with phone number. Luckily I am not a terrorist or a scammer. I have sent a letter to this woman letting her know I have her information that Mr Cooper sent to me and an encrypted and secure email message

  9. George says:

All of us with a clue know that your identity theft had nothing to do with the data breach.
You gave out your details via facebook, instagram, etc
