Fintech startup Revolut confirmed it was the victim of a data breach that the company says exposed the personal information of more than 50,000 of its users.

The Revolut data breach was described as a “highly targeted” cyberattack that allowed an unauthorized third party to gain access to Revolut’s database, Bleeping Computer reports

Details of how the hacker was able to gain access to the financial technology company’s database have not been disclosed at this time; however, it is presumed that the attack involved social engineering.

The personal information likely disclosed in the data breach includes Revolut users’ full names, email addresses, phone numbers, account data, home addresses and some limited payment card data, Bleeping Computer reports.

Company says it ‘responded quickly’ after learning of Revolut data breach

Revolut reportedly says it responded quickly to the cyberattack and was able to isolate it within 24 hours while reassuring its users that their funds are safe.

“To be clear, no funds have been accessed or stolen. Our customers’ money is safe — as it has always been. All customers can continue to use their cards and accounts as normal,” Revolut says in a statement to Bleeping Computer.

As a precaution, however, the company says that it is forming a task team that will be dedicated to monitoring user accounts to ensure that both their data and money remain safe, Bleeping Computer reports.

Users who did not receive an email about the Revolut data breach, meanwhile, are reportedly not affected by the incident, according to the company.

“We immediately identified and isolated the attack to effectively limit its impact and have contacted those customers affected. Customers who have not received an email have not been impacted,” Revolut tells Bleeping Computer.

In related data breach news, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against KeyBank earlier this month, claiming the financial institution had insufficient cybersecurity practices and thus bore responsibility for a July data breach
