Reddit data breach overview:

  • Who: Reddit has revealed that it suffered a data breach that allowed bad actors to steal documents and source code from the company’s internal business systems.
  • Why: The data breach was caused by a phishing attack targeting Reddit employees that involved a fake landing page.
  • Where: Reddit is used by consumers nationwide.

Reddit has revealed it suffered a data breach that allowed hackers to breach the company’s  internal business systems and steal documents and source code.

The company said hackers conducted a phishing attack — involving a fake landing page — against its employees that aimed at stealing credentials and two-factor authentication tokens, reports Bleeping Computer.

One of Reddit’s employees reportedly fell victim to the phishing attack, allowing the bad actors to breach the company’s internal systems and compromise source code and data.

After successfully obtaining a single employee’s credentials, the attacker gained access to some internal docs, code, as well as some internal dashboards and business systems,” Reddit said, in a security incident notice

Reddit reassured its users that its investigation determined that users’ passwords and accounts were safe, and said there is no indication that the company’s primary production systems were breached.

Exposed data included limited information for company contacts, employees, advertisers, says Reddit

The exposed data, according to Reddit, was made up of limited contact information for company contacts and employees, in addition to some limited information involving advertisers.

“We have no evidence to suggest that any of your non-public data has been accessed, or that Reddit’s information has been published or distributed online,” the company said.

Reddit said its security team “responded quickly” to the data breach by removing the hackers access to its internal business systems and “commencing an internal investigation.”

The company further assured its users that it would be continuing to “investigate and monitor the situation closely,” and that it is working with its employees to “fortify our security skills.”

“Our goal is to fully understand and prevent future incidents of this nature, and we will use this post to provide any additional updates as we learn and can share more,” Reddit said.

Earlier this month, Google cell network provider Google Fi confirmed that a data breach it believes is connected to a recent T-Mobile data breach led to the unintended exposure of customer data.

Oh dear, I just filed for a class action with T-Mobile after learning that I am basically forced to call for customer service due to an “announcement’ on my account page stating a data breach, but claiming NO personal information was leaked. Is that a lie? I was also told by the customer service rep that I am blocked from making any changes online due to a data breach from a year and a half ago?? What is going on? I now see the other comments and realize that maybe that is why I randomly cannot get onto google search, I get a ‘broken page’ error. I have to restart my computer and sometimes my phone (both apple). Please add me, thanks.
