Ransomware group claims to have hacked all of Sony systems

Sony ransomware hack overview: 

• Who: Ransomware group Ransomed.vc claims to have breached Sony’s systems and says it will be putting allegedly stolen data up for sale on Sept. 28. 
• Why: Ransomed.vc said it has decided to put the allegedly stolen Sony data up for sale after the company allegedly refused to pay a ransom to retrieve it.

A ransomware group is claiming to have infiltrated Sony’s systems and has threatened to put the information it stole up for sale on Sept. 28, after the technology company allegedly refused to pay a ransom. 

The data extortion gang Ransomed.vc wrote on its blog that it now plans to sell the data it stole after Sony refused to pay to retrieve it, reports Tech Monitor. 

The group reportedly posted samples of stolen data that featured a PowerPoint presentation belonging to Sony’s quality assurance division, along with internal screenshots possibly showing a Sony workstation along with some Java files. 

Ransomed.vc reportedly made its announcement about its plans for the allegedly stolen Sony data on both the clear and dark webs, however, its claims remain unverified at this time. 

“We have successfully compromised (sic) all of sony systems,” the group wrote, as reported by Cyber Security Connect. “We won’t ransom them! We will sell the data. Due to Sony not wanting to pay. DATA IS FOR SALE.” 

Sony told IGN on Sept. 26 that the company was currently investigating the claims made by Ransomed.vc, but said it would “have no further comment,” reports IGN. 

Attack would be second to victimize Sony in recent month, if true

If legitimate, the attack would be the second time in recent months that Sony was victimized by a cyberattack, with the company also having been victimized by the Russian ransomware group Cl0p as part of its attack on the file transfer software MOVEit Transfer. 

In that case, Sony was one of hundreds of different companies around the world who had their data exposed after Cl0p was able to exploit a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer software, with the tech company experiencing a data breach in June, reports Tech Monitor. 

Ransomed.vc, meanwhile, would appear to be a newer hacking group, with it reportedly only being discovered by cybersecurity researchers last month. The group boasts on its blog to be the “leading company in digital peace tax,” reports Tech Monitor. 

In another case involving Sony and a cyberattack, the company agreed to settle claims in 2016 that revolved around a 2014 cyberattack that exposed the personally identifiable information of its workers.
