MGM Resorts was recently sued as a result of a data breach that could have impacted over 10 million customers.

The hotel and resort company recently announced that they discovered an unauthorized breach of their system last summer. Allegedly the information was discovered on a cloud server and only contained limited information about guests, but full details about what was breached have not been shared yet.

According to the information MGM shared with the media, names of guests and their phone numbers were revealed, but the exact details around how many guests had their information exposed are not yet known.

Was Your Personal Information Leaked?

One technology website shared that 10.6 million guests had their personal details leaked on a hacking forum. The hacking forum reportedly included personally identifying information about government officials, executives of technology companies, celebrities, and reporters, among others.

If you stayed at an MGM resort property in the past few years, your information might have been leaked during this data breach

How Did Personal Information Theft Occur at MGM Resorts?

Businesses of all sizes and in all locations could be exposed to potential data security issues. In addition to the millions of hotel customers who had things like their email address and names listed in the breach, it is believed that another 1,300 had more sensitive information shared such as birthdates and addresses, which hackers could use to carry out identity theft.

Which MGM Properties Were Affected by the Breach?

The company has not yet revealed which of the properties were affected by this data breach, so anyone who stayed at an MGM Resorts property could be affected, according to a report by NBC News. The brand has multiple properties along the Las Vegas Strip.

You may want to review your previous travel itineraries or search your email to see if you have stayed in an MGM Resorts hotel; the company said that the data exposed was “old” but did not clarify how far back customers might have stayed to have been included in this breach.

What Should You Do If You Were Affected?

If you suspect that your information was among those collected and shared by hackers, it’s important to monitor your credit. Suspicious activity, like the opening of new accounts, can occur when a hacker gets access to your personal data like your address or your birthday.

Consider using a monitoring service to be alerted as soon as possible about potential fraud. Furthermore, you may want to stay up to date with the news about this MGM personal information data breach; if more information is revealed, customers might be able to search a database to see if their name and other info was exposed. Also, consider updating all of your online passwords and freezing your credit.

Filing a Personal Information Theft Lawsuit

If the personal information leaked led to security or identity theft problems for you, you might be able to file a lawsuit against MGM Resorts.

MGM is not the only company affected by data breaches. Companies have a responsibility to implement data security protocols that keep private information relatively safe from hackers; however, a number of major companies have been affected, including another hotel chain Marriot and even Facebook
