FTX, BlockFi, Genesis bankruptcy claimant data breach overview:
- Who: A data breach against claims and noticing agent Kroll LLC has exposed personal information belonging to bankruptcy claimants in cases involving BlockFi, Genesis and FTX.
- Why: The data breach was the result of a targeted “SIM swapping” attack against one of Kroll’s employees.
- Where: The bankruptcy cases are in Delaware, New York and New Jersey federal courts.
A threat actor has gained access to the personal information belonging to bankruptcy claimants in claims involving BlockFi, FTX and Genesis.
The data was the result of a “SIM swapping” attack against claims and noticing agent Kroll LLC, which said in an Aug. 25 news release that a cyber threat actor was able to gain access to certain files by targeting a Kroll employee.
Kroll said it has already taken action to secure the accounts belonging to BlockFi, FTX and Genesis, and has notified by email individuals who were affected by the data breach.
“We are cooperating with the FBI and a full investigation is underway. We have no evidence to suggest other Kroll systems or accounts were impacted,” the claims and noticing agent said.
FTX, BlockFi, Genesis tell bankruptcy claimants to watch for scammers
Genesis, a bankrupt crypto lender, informed claimants that the files compromised during the data breach contained names, addresses, email addresses, and claims against the company’s debtors, reports Law360.
FTX and BlockFi, meanwhile, reportedly stated on X — formerly known as Twitter — last week that the data breach did not expose any passwords, but urged claimants to remain on the alert for scammers going forward.
Specifically, FTX, BlockFi and Genesis warned claimants to be on the lookout for scammers pretending to be bankruptcy courts in Delaware, New York and New Jersey that are handling the claims, Law360 reports.
BlockFi reportedly filed for bankruptcy last November after not receiving a $400 million rescue loan from FTX, which itself landed in Delaware bankruptcy court following the collapse of its self-issued FTT utility token.
Genesis, meanwhile, filed for Chapter 11 in January, with the failure of FTX causing it to incur more than $5 billion in debt, following a mass withdrawal event, according to Law360.
In other news involving FTX, a new indictment against founder Sam Bankman-Fried was filed earlier this month over claims he misappropriated funds to make more than $100 million in political donations prior to the 2022 election.
