California Concealed Carry Data Breach overview:

  • Who: California residents with concealed carry weapon permits had their personal information exposed in a data breach during the state Department of Justice’s unveiling of its “2022 Firearms Dashboard Portal.”
  • Why: The data breach exposed the personal information of concealed carry weapon holders, including their names, address, age, and license type, among other things.
  • Where: The data breach affects concealed carry weapon holders across California.

The personal information of California residents with concealed carry weapon permits has been exposed following a data breach of the state’s Department of Justice (DOJ), authorities revealed on Tuesday.

The data breach was reported by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office—which says it was informed of the breach by the California State Sherriff’s Association—and occurred as the California DOJ unveiled its “2022 Firearms Dashboard Portal,” reports NBC News

This public site allows access to certain information, however, personal information of Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit holders is not supposed to be visible,” the sheriff’s office said.

Personal information such as the name, address, age, license type, and Criminal Identification Index number was exposed in the data breach, according to the sheriff’s office.

California DOJ Takes Down Dashboard Site After Data Breach

The State Attorney General’s Office has stated it is working with urgency to determine the scope of the breach,” the sheriff’s office said. “It plans to contact CCW holders directly to advise them of the breach and will institute a program to reduce any harm or damages to CCW holders that resulted from the breach.”

The California DOJ took down the dashboard site and links related to it in the wake of the data breach, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriffs office said it is “unknown” how long the personal information of the concealed carry permit holders was accessible.

A class action lawsuit arguing that 18-year-olds should be able to purchase handguns was filed earlier this month against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, its acting director Marvin Richardson and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The individual behind the class action lawsuit claims the federal government is violating the Second and Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by not allowing citizens who are under the age of 21 to purchase handguns from firearms dealers who are federally licensed.

  3. Shannon S. Victory says:

I was negatively impacted by this data breach. Someone was able to open up an Amazon account and charge in my name and bank account. I would like to join any class action suit against California DOJ and the Attorney General for this breach of confidence. I have had to cancel bank cards, and freeze all credit , And put fraud alerts pertaining to my SS # . Not to mention contacting all my creditors and letting them know that the card on file is no longer good. I had to take a day off of work to accomplish all this. Major inconvenience!

  4. Michael Davis says:

Please add me to the suit, my personal information deserves to be protected

  5. Christina Davis says:

I would like to join in the Civil Suit regarding the CCW data breach.

Add me as well. This was no accident.

    1. Shannon S. Victory says:

I agree, just conveniently happens after SCOTUS ruled on NY CCW case. I smell a Second Amendment hating liberal trying to get even.

  7. Derek Schultz says:

I have held 3 CCW’s in Santa Cruz County under two different sheriffs and was denied under the third sheriff hart. I would like to join any suit brought against California DOJ and any other department associated with the breach. I do not believe this was an unintentional breach.

  8. Jeff says:

This was purposely done… I am a police officer now and my information is exposed to every criminal in the country to come knocking on my door because I had my CCW before becoming a LEO. I will be speaking to a lawyer Monday. I received my “doj blunder” letter in the mail a few days ago. I am pissed!

  9. Leon says:

Add me to that list ols

  10. mahanna says:

This breach smells. California DOJ is better than this – I call BS on the ‘unintentional breach’ – someone inside profited. The AG investigation of his own agency is laughable. FBI and BATFE should investigate Cali. Civil suits should be raining down on California.

    1. Shannon S.Victory says:

I agree, we all know that California legislature hates firearms and does everything to restrict them. I feel this is an act by somebody internally to get even with us law-abiding Second Amendment citizens who have concealed carry licenses. This was intentional, not accidental. I will gladly join any class action suit against California DOJ and the Attorney General. Enough is enough! They have put my family at risk now.
