Cash App data breach overview:

  • Who: A Texas woman has filed a class action lawsuit against Block Inc and Cash App.
  • Why: The lawsuit alleges the companies were negligent, and allowed a data breach that saw consumers personal information leaked.
  • Where: The Cash App data breach was filed in a California federal court.

Cash App and its parent company were negligent in their data security measures, leading to a 2021 data breach that released the information of 8.2 million Cash App Investing customers, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Amanda Gordon filed the class action lawsuit against Block Inc and Cash App Investing LLC Nov. 2 in a California federal court, alleging negligence and violations of consumer laws.

Cash App, which is owned by Block, is a mobile app that allows users to transfer money from one person to another. It also provides investing services which allows users to purchase stock and Bitcoin through its platform.

According to the lawsuit, due to Cash App and Block’s negligent security features the companies failed to properly secure and protect app users’ personal identifying information (PII).

“Defendants’ negligence has resulted in the exploitation and release of Cash App users’ PII,” the lawsuit states.

Cash App and Block should have known the security systems were deficient, lawsuit alleges

The alleged failure to take reasonable steps to safeguard consumer information led to a December 2021 data breach that resulted in the release of PII of 8.2 million current and former Cash App Investing customers, the lawsuit states.

Customers’ full names and brokerage account numbers, the value and holdings of brokerage portfolios, and trading activity were all exposed, Gordon says.

Cash App and Block should have known that their security measures, protocols, screening procedures, and systems were deficient, the lawsuit alleges.

“By and through Defendants’ negligence, they have caused financial losses and negative consequences and their negligence will continue to harm Class Members’ into the future,” the lawsuit alleges.

Gordon is looking to represent all current or former customers of the companies who had their PII compromised in the breach.

Gordon is suing for negligence, violation of California consumer laws, fraud, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract, invasion of privacy and breach of fiduciary duty.

She is seeking certification of the class action, an order forcing Cash App to get a third-party security auditor and make security improvements, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

This is not the first class action to be filed against Block and Cash App after the data breach. In August, the pair were hit with a class action lawsuit alleging they failed to safeguard the information of their customers during a December 2021 data breach.

  2. Denise says:

Someone fraudulently access my credit card and used it to send payments to someone $5.00 At a time over and over until available funds were exhausted. This did not go through my cash app. It was done by a fraudulent person accessing a credit card I own and using it by whatever means to send the monies to another party through the use of the cash app platform so that cash app charged my card as per the fraudsters usage.

I was scammed out of 100 dollars through cash app. My old Facebook was compromised so I shut it down but somehow someone got it up again and sent 100 to cash app and then they sent it to my cash app to send to a Christina Pena whom I’ve never heard of much less sent money to. Now I have followed the procedures they require me to do and I just got informed that they will not refund my money and they are sorry that this happened to me. I want my 100 dollars back may not seem like alot but I work hard for every dime I make and besides its the morals. I feel as though cash app is allowing theft to happen. Also they said my name doesn’t match so I asked how does my bank account match

I recently was scammed by cash app. Someone deposit 2,000 in my account unauthorized and I immediately return the money in seconds and a month later they disputed the charges with their bank and cash app saw that I returned the money and basically said they got 4,000 and it’s nothing can be done and hung up on me. Cash app never disputed anything with my bank instead they fraudulent sent a purchase of 2,000 like I was buying something from the person and then sent me a email stating they were taking the money because of a dispute. If they would of properly investigated they of did a paper trail of what they did what the refund I sent back and told their back the money was
      Refunded.
I believe they have employees who is scamming people and they don’t care and
      Just rude and basically tell
      You yea
      You were scammed.
      Sad but true

      1. Adele Faniel says:

I forgot to mention cash app sent a purchase to my bank and got a
Payment for 2,000. Unauthorized charge my bank had nothing to do with the deposit or refund either transaction. My bank is going after them for fraud.

      2. Roseanna Regalado says:

Yeah I think that the employees are scamming too!
They are rude and don’t help you get to the bottom or underlying problems. They are always making it hard for the real bank account holder to access their own account if you lose a password but make it easy for the criminals to access and steal you cash or info.😒😠🤔

  6. Violet Roberts says:

I was a customer with cash app since 2017 the first time I ever did a direct deposit was with my pandemic economic payment I received the $600 payment and it shows where that reflects my account and I thought my taxes at the same time zero filing status I received a paper from IRS telling me to file for my economic payment because I might be doing a refund well I did that all to find out that my money was sent to cash app do your prior with the six hundred dollar economic payment and it’s so sad because I went online months and months back and forth with these people because they’re responsible if my money was sent to them then they should be able to show me what reflection account and they couldn’t they were telling me all about how I was spend my money but it still doesn’t show where that money actually was and put it in my account I reached out numerous times now being that I had the IRS investigate them arrested it couldn’t do anything because it went to the account it doesn’t matter if it was since the account it wasn’t distributed to me and I have proof of it and it’s not fair that they just took my money like that and on the days when they say it was supposed to been direct deposited to my account the mysteriously those days are blank is only one transaction that’s what me going to Walmart paying money for my card that was already on there so one day I wake up my brother is supposed to send me my new cash app a couple months back and my cash out account was closed I contacted him and asked him why and they said due to terms of conditions that was violated by cash out and I had nothing wrong so this is really bonus to me and I’m still out of the 1400 economic refund and it’s so sad how a company like this can just take money from people and not the most vulnerable time was hard I mean the world was in the recession and now time is even worse for me I lost everything I have nothing but my car and that economic can help me not be homeless in my car and I really feel that they should pay and it should be something that should be done so I can get my money back then that itself company and my money sent to them but never was actually put into my account for me to have access to it it shows where they got the payment but it never was distribute to and I have proof of it and it’s unfair because everyone else got there economic pandemic payment and I got ripped off by cash out and I have the proof of the statements from when the money is supposed to be there and the day was supposed to be deposited and it’s all blank and it really doesn’t add up and I want Justice I want my money I have the right to have it no one else should have that except for me
