Cash App, Block class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Michelle Salinas and Raymel Washington filed a class action lawsuit against Block, Inc. and Cash App Investing, LLC.
  • Why: Salinas and Washington claim Block and Cash App failed to protect their customer’s private information during a December 2021 data breach.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Cash App and Block failed to safeguard the information of their customers during a December 2021 data breach, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiffs Michelle Salinas and Raymel Washington claim Cash App and Block’s alleged failure to secure their accounts led to “the unauthorized public release of the personally identifiable information of 8.2 million current and former Cash App Investing customers.”

The data breach compromised the security of the financial accounts, including Cash App Investing portfolios, of affected customers, they allege.

“The security of Defendants’ customers’ Private Information is accordingly of the utmost importance,” states the Block and Cash App class action.

Salinas and Washington claim that even one instance of their private information being misused or improperly accessed by cybercriminals can “lead to substantial financial losses.”

“These costs will not only impact Defendants’ bottom line but, more importantly, the millions of Cash App Investing users whose Private Information is now in the hands of cybercriminals,” the Block and Cash App class action states.

Cash App, Block class action alleges former employee downloaded info without authorization

The data breach came to light after Block disclosed that one of its former employees had downloaded the private information of Cash App investors without being authorized to do so, according to the Cash App and Block class action.

While alleging that the exact reason for the data breach “remain unclear,” the plaintiffs argue “there is no doubt that Defendants failed to adequately protect Plaintiffs’ and Class members’ Private Information.”

Salinas and Washington claim Cash App and Block are guilty of breach of contract and negligence and in violation of California’s Unfair Competition Law and the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act, among other things.

They demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, compensatory and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.

Salinas and Washington want to represent a nationwide class of consumers who had their information compromised in the data breach, along with subclasses from California, Illinois and Texas.

A similar class action lawsuit was filed against R.R. Donnelly earlier this month over claims the printing company was negligent in protecting the data of its customers during a 2021 data breach.

Rathod of Migliaccio & Rathod LLP; Gary S. Graifman and Melissa R. Emert of Kantrowitz Goldhamer & Graifman PC; and Scott. D Hirsch of Scott Hirsch Law Group.

Has this been settled? I’ve been going crazy trying to figure out if it was ultimately google or Verizon or which company leaked my information. I’ve used cash app very regularly for like 2 years. Sometime last year my phone started acting strange, then eventually all my accounts were hacked and all my passwords were changed including multiple money accounts. My custody case that I’d spent $50k on fighting for my children was sabotaged and since my emails weren’t accessible my very expensive attorney withdrew from the case and I lost my case completely. Courts couldn’t communicate with me, I couldn’t get onto zoom for hearings or to video call my kids. I changed my number 3x and bought all new devices that still didn’t work. My laptops are destroyed and phones and I owe hundreds to multiple isp companies. I was working online and I could no longer access my account to log in, it’s been 3+ months. I was making $800+ a week. My credit was 760 a year ago. Now I’m packing to leave my apartment because I am evicted because I cannot access my accounts and had to claim identity theft. My credit score dropped below 600 and I was forced to max out credit cards I did not want. My medical records were leaked on the open source market and that’s how I found out I have cancer most likely and carry the DNA etc. But I lost everything. My intellectual property rights were violated. My ex played a big part in tampering with my life because when he realized the vulnerability he began recording me without my knowledge through home apps. Footage I thought was private was broadcast to my father and neighbors. I was prevented from medical care because my devices were shut off and I couldn’t so much as call for a ride. I’m disabled and now need treatment for cancer and I can’t get it. I was kept from receiving anxiety meds that I’ve been on for 10 years, which ultimately is very dangerous. I couldn’t even call the police when I was afraid for my safety. Please contact me at your earliest convenience, I was about to contact lawyers in the morning. I have proof of everything I’ve listed. Thanks.

Please add me to the lawsuit against cash app for a year them scumbags slowly let someone cashout my account to a Wells Fargo account that is not mine they nore did I even have a account with them but BlockInc/CashApp claims it was me that I am lieing about it and that I live in Michigan when in fact I live in New Jersey where I was born and raised and still reside my bank since December of 2020 for about 5 years was Investors Bank (Just switched banks) but been fighting with Cash App for over a year for my $784.12 that was stolen from me have reported it to government sites to wit Cash App insist I did it and im still fighting with them about it but now in emails but this person is not calling me a liar (thank god) but because of all this situation being on going my mental health has drastically gotten worse plus I lost my section 8 housing have become homeless due to all this am still homeless but again to my disability I can’t stay in shelters or live in community living situations cause it endangers me and others so I been suffering out in the cold weather I am legally disabled and live on ssi and I do not want to end up back in the loony bin hospital or anything but I have not stopped fighting back with them in emails I will never give up on it till I get what I’m owed and then some for my suffering and loses so 🙏🏻PLZ ADD ME TO THIS LAWSUIT🙏🏻PLZ

  9. Joni Arabie says:

. Please add me to this cash app has been letting someone hack my account and I even sent proof and they just laughed

    1. You know says:

Yea, it’s awful every one is getting hit some kind of way these days be careful messing with Cash App. Some Lisa Magruder, Mary Cofee, and some Mike dude are scammers pretending to be Cash App Reps.

  10. Jonathan says:

Please add me to the class action. A user sent money to themselves from my account without me using my phone. My phone was sitting in front of me when the transaction occurred. I was constantly getting notifications that a person was accepting money from me that I didn’t authorize. This isn’t the first time it happened. CashApp hasn’t resolved my issue.
