Caesars class action overview:

- Why: Caesars did not protect the personal information of a significant number of its 65 million members as its loyalty program was subject to a data breach, the lawsuit claims.
- Where: The Caesars class action was filed in federal court in New Jersey.
Caesars Entertainment Inc. did not properly protect the personal information of a “significant number” of its more than 65 million loyalty program members that were subjected to a data breach, a new class action lawsuit claims.
The members’ data involved in the breach included their names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers and Social Security numbers, the class action claims.
Caesars stored the loyalty program personal information in an online-accessible fashion but did not properly protect it, the class action lawsuit claims.
“News organizations identified Scattered Spider or UNC 3944, which specializes in social engineering attacks, to be responsible,” the Caesars class action says. “Reportedly, Caesars paid roughly $15 million in an attempt to placate hackers who threatened to leak the sensitive customer data stolen during a summer cyberattack. Defendant’s payout was approximately half of the $30 million that the hackers had demanded.”
Caesars loyalty members allegedly subject to identity theft after breach
Caesars told the office of Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey that it believes the data was accessed Aug. 23 but the data breach was discovered Sept. 7. Some Caesars loyalty members were informed of the data breach Oct. 11, the Caesars lawsuit says.
The personal information will likely be sold on the dark web and then users will be subject to identity theft for the rest of their lives because of the combination of Social Security numbers and identifying information, the class action says.
Another class action was filed this month claiming Caesars Entertainment Inc. failed to adequately safeguard its customers’ personally identifiable information (PII), leaving the data vulnerable to hackers in a recent Caesars data breach.
