The private information of 21 million consumers was compromised and already listed for sale to cybercriminals after a massive data breach affecting a mobile parking services company, ParkMobile, claims a class action lawsuit filed Thursday.

Lead plaintiff, Tyler Baker, filed the complaint seeking to represent other ParkMobile customers nationwide in Georgia federal court. Baker claims that ParkMobile’s lax cybersecurity procedures lead to the theft of an extensive amount of private identifiable information about him and millions of other consumers who used the company to pay for parking.

ParkMobile is a parking services company that millions of consumers use to pay for parking across the nation using a mobile app. The company requires users to submit private identifiable information to set up an account to use the service.

Baker says that he and other consumers were informed of the ParkMobile data breach in late March of this year. The company said that cybercriminals were able to hack a third-party vendor and steal customer information, including names, license plate numbers, email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle nicknames, passwords, and home addresses.

The plaintiff claims that he has been the subject of unrelenting phishing and other cyber-attacks since the breach. He alleges that he was forced to shut down his PayPal account, but still receives fake emails telling him he has a $30,000 deposit in the account in an attempt to lure him into disclosing more personal information.

Baker says he has spent countless hours attempting to protect himself and says he is concerned that he and other consumers will be victims of identity theft and fraud in the future due to the ParkMobile data breach.

Indeed, Baker alleges that the information gleaned from the ParkMobile data breach has already been listed for sale on the internet at the price of $125,000 in a Russian crime forum.

The class action lawsuit alleges that ParkMobile’s own shoddy data protection procedures resulted in the cyberattack.

Had ParkMobile remedied the deficiencies in its information storage and security systems, followed industry guidelines, and adopted security measures recommended by experts in the field, ParkMobile could have prevented intrusion into its information storage and security systems and, ultimately, the theft of Plaintiff’s and Class Members’ confidential [information],” alleges the lawsuit.

Baker seeks to represent other consumers whose private identifiable information was compromised in the ParkMobile data breach. The class action lawsuit seeks to hold the company responsible for losses and other expenses related to the data breach, along with attorney and court fees.

My information was also stolen and is now on the dark web bevause of it. On Thanksgiving (2021), fraud alert from my bank contacted me to see if I’d made charges on my card in Paris, France… I’m in Tennessee. The bank blocked my card for me that day. I used my husband’s card to go to our online automated bill pay to update, and as soon as I put his card into the Park Mobile (I had no idea about the data breaxh and was nit alerted or contacted by Park Mobile) his card was also stolen and someone tried to make charges on Spotify.
