A Delaware plaintiff recently filed an Eliquis irreversible bleeding lawsuit after the death of his wife, alleging the blood thinner caused her fatal complications.
The plaintiff, Robert W., filed the lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb on behalf of his deceased wife, Elda W.
According to the lawsuit, Elda took Eliquis at the direction of her doctor in order to treat her atrial fibrillation.
However, the lawsuit claims that Elda suffered from serious Eliquis side effects from around January 1, 2014 to August 9, 2014, culminating in Eliquis irreversible bleeding that led to her death.
After his wife’s tragic death, Robert decided to file a lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb, alleging that the blood thinner medication caused his wife to suffer Eliquis irreversible bleeding that was ultimately fatal.
The lawsuit, and others like it, allege that Bristol-Myers Squibb knew about the possibility of Eliquis irreversible bleeding and even fatality linked with the drug, yet failed to take steps to warn the public and the medical community.
According to the lawsuit, the manufacturer continued to market Eliquis as safe and effective despite having evidence of its significant dangers. Instead, the company actively concealed this information from consumers and the medical community.
However, had Robert’s wife or her doctors known about the possibility of Eliquis irreversible bleeding, the lawsuit claims they would have chosen a safer alternative.
This Eliquis irreversible bleeding lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including but not limited to defective design, failure to warn, negligence, fraudulent concealment, and wrongful death.
What is Eliquis?
Eliquis is a popular blood thinner drug, and belongs to a relatively new class of drugs known as Factor Xa Inhibitors, a class of drugs that has begun to replace warfarin as the accepted standard.
Unfortunately, Eliquis and others in its class have been linked in a number of studies, complaints, and lawsuits due to a series of serious side effects, including Eliquis irreversible bleeding complications.
For most patients treated with the drug, Eliquis side effects are mild and go away on their own. These side effects include nausea, easy bruising, and minor bleeding that does not become more serious.
Eliquis Irreversible Bleeding
In other, rarer cases, Eliquis side effects may become extreme and even life-threatening. Internal bleeding is a common side effect in blood thinners, since these drugs stop blood clots from forming.
In most cases, blood clots are dangerous, which is why blood thinners are used to treat clotting. However, in situations such as a car accident or emergency surgery, blood clots are one of the body’s only defenses to avoid bleeding too much.
When a patient on a blood thinner is in an accident or emergency surgery, their body can no longer form these life-saving blood clots.
Warfarin and other blood thinners have antidotes to quickly counteract this effect and enable the body to clot again, but Eliquis has no such antidote.
This means that in dangerous internal bleeding emergencies, Eliquis patients may be in much greater danger than those who took another kind of blood thinner drug.
