african american doctor preparing to insert IUD

ParaGard is a type of long-term birth control known as an intrauterine device, or IUD. It is a small, T-shaped plastic frame with coiled copper wire around it that is inserted into the uterus, the copper producing an inflammatory reaction that prevents pregnancy for up to ten years after insertion.

While there are a number of IUDs on the market, ParaGard is the only copper IUD currently available in the U.S.

ParaGard Insertion Steps

The copper IUD insertion process is fairly straightforward, but removal may be tied to complications.

When getting an IUD:

  • Before insertion, the nurse or doctor will ask about medical history
  • They will check the patient’s vagina, cervix, and uterus
  • They may test the patient for STDs
  • Patients may be offered medicine, which can help open and/or numb the cervix for easier insertion
  • The nurse or doctor will insert a speculum into the vagina
  • Using a special inserter device, they will place the IUD through the opening of the cervix and into the uterus

That’s it! The IUD insertion process itself generally takes less than five minutes. The device can be inserted regardless of where the user is in their menstrual cycle, and generally even whether they’ve recently given birth or had an abortion.

What to Expect after ParaGard Insertion

During or immediately after ParaGard placement, some people experience mild side effects like cramps or pain. Side effects can be more severe for some than for others, but are reported to go away quickly—within a couple of minutes—especially with medicine. Some people may feel dizzy after an IUD insertion, and a few people may faint.

When choosing an IUD for your birth control method, it is probably a good idea for users to ask someone to come with so they can drive them back home after the IUD insertion procedure.

ParaGard Bleeding After Insertion

Some people suffer side effects after getting an IUD. For example, after ParaGard insertion, some people may experience cramping and spotting (that is, light bleeding outside of the menstrual period), but this generally clears up within 3 to 6 months.

Sometimes, however, copper IUDs can worsen the effects of cramps and make periods heavier.  It is also important to note that an IUD is not a perfect birth control method and, whether a ParaGard IUD or different brand, cannot prevent STDs.

ParaGard Removal Process

IUDs need to be replaced every given number of years —Mirena is usually changed every 7 years and ParaGard every 12 years. This duration is part of many people’s IUD decision-making process. Unfortunately, ParaGard removal itself has been linked with certain side effects.

Mild complications after ParaGard removal include light bleeding and cramping, as well as pain and heavier bleeding during menstruation.

A report published in the Open Journal of Clinical & Medical Case Reports notes however that several people have reported IUD breakage during removal, leaving parts of the device inside the body. Device breakage could cause infection or even perforation of the uterus. This can require more serious invasive treatments, such as surgery, to fix.

ParaGard Removal Complications

A growing number of people are coming forward with claims that their ParaGard IUDs have had serious side effects.

If you or someone you love has suffered from any ParaGard insertion side effects, such as bleeding complications, or issues after undergoing ParaGard removal, you may be able to file a lawsuit and pursue compensation. Of course, filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by these complications, but it can at least help to alleviate the financial burden incurred by medical expenses, lost wages, and more.

Filing a lawsuit can be a daunting prospect, especially while dealing with medical problems, so Top Class Actions has laid the groundwork for you by connecting you with an experienced attorney. Consulting an attorney can help you determine if you have a claim, navigate the complexities of litigation, and maximize your potential compensation.
