An Illinois woman recently added her claim to the growing number of DePuy lawsuits over metal hip replacement complications, alleging serious injuries.
Plaintiff Jenny T. underwent a metal on metal hip replacement surgery for a DePuy Pinnacle device.
However, after the implantation, Jenny claims she has suffered from serious injuries as a direct result of the device’s defectiveness, the hip replacement lawsuit claims.
After receiving the metal on metal hip replacement, Jenny has experienced a variety of metal hip replacement complications, including discomfort, pain, stiffness, loss of motion, and damage to her hip joint.
The damage to Jenny’s hip joint includes metallosis, necrosis, soft tissue damage, and muscle damage, among other injuries, according to the hip replacement lawsuit.
The hip replacement lawsuit further claims that Jenny has been at risk for metal toxicity because of the elevated levels of chromium and cobalt released into her body from the implant.
Because of these metal hip replacement complications, Jenny has been required to undergo excess surgery, a right hip revision surgery in order to combat these complications.
Unfortunately, hip revision surgery causes an even higher risk of dislocation than the original surgery, studies have found.
Indeed, 14.4 percent of revision surgery patients experience dislocation, compared with 3.9 percent of patients who only underwent the original hip replacement surgery, found a study from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
This indicates that revision surgery patients are four times more likely to suffer from dislocation than those who have only had the initial implant.
Metal Hip Replacement Complications
For some patients, metal on metal hip replacement surgery can cause serious complications, which are often painful, and tend to make basic movements difficult.
In some cases, these metal hip replacement complications can be extremely serious, leading to tissue death or bone erosion, both of which can lead to permanent damage that revision surgery cannot fix.
Metal toxicity can cause these serious metal hip replacement complications, as metal on metal devices tend to rub together, releasing metals into a patient’s body.
This and similar lawsuits allege that DePuy was aware of these dangerous metal hip replacement complications, yet continued to market their devices as perfectly safe and effective.
Lawsuits allege that not only was DePuy aware of these potential complications, but that the company chose to actively conceal this information from the public and the medical community. This deliberate concealment prevented patients and the medical community from fully understanding the problems linked with the device.
