If you’ve suffered iBalance knee implant problems, you’re not alone. Hundreds of patients might suffer from issues caused by a defective tibial plate.

Arthrex issued a voluntary recall of its iBalance TKA Tibial Tray in December 2015. Arthrex recalled the part because the tray’s smooth texture might interfere with bonding. Previously released tibial trays had been created with a rough texture that aided the part’s ability to bond correctly and completely. The smooth-textured tibial tray could have led to the need for early knee revision surgeries.

Without proper bonding, the tibial tray and connecting components won’t endure the stress of daily knee movements. At least one surgeon reported he was able to remove the tibial tray simply by pulling it by hand.

The Arthrex iBalance knee system was designed to treat multi-compartmental knee cartilage degeneration, most often caused by osteoarthritis. Because the knee joints must support a majority of a person’s body weight, the knees can become more easily injured than other non-weight-bearing joints.

In a total knee replacement surgery, the goal is to resurface the damaged knee joint by installing metal or plastic shields over the ends of the affected bones. Subsequent surgeries are planned to remove metal plates and screws after healing has been achieved.

Arthrex marketed its iBalance knee replacement system as one that never required additional surgery to remove hardware. Unfortunately, for many patients suffering iBalance knee implant issues, the only remedy is to have another surgery.

iBalance Knee Implant Problems Early On

Patients report having iBalance knee implant concerns from the very start. One woman said she had suffered excruciating pain, knee instability and hyperextension of the affected knee ever since she had received the iBalance knee in 2014. When her surgeon conducted a revision surgery of her knee, he expressed surprise when the components came apart with a gentle tug.

Indications of iBalance knee implant problems can include:

  • Severe pain
  • Inflammation
  • Reduced mobility
  • Infection
  • Bone damage
  • Nerve damage
  • Disassociation of the insert
  • Loosening
  • Hyperextension
  • Knee instability
  • Total knee replacement failure

Any patient who has suffered severe, permanent injuries as a result of iBalance knee implant problems that necessitated revision surgery could be eligible for compensation. Lost wages, reduced earning capacity, unexpected expenses for hospitalization, a second surgery, rehabilitation, and medication could all be attributed to poor design of the tibial tray.

Patients allege their iBalance knee replacement problems could have been avoided entirely if Arthrex would have initially conducted proper testing and quality inspections before the new components were placed in patients’ knees.

If you or someone you love has endured a repeat knee surgery due to iBalance knee implant problems, you could be eligible for compensation through legal means.
