A recent testosterone lawsuit alleges the low t medication Axiron is unsafe.
It joins other lawsuits in a multidistrict litigation against testosterone product manufacturers claiming testosterone therapy drugs put patients at significant risk for blood clots, stroke, and heart attacks.
Plaintiff Karl L. of Colorado filed the testosterone lawsuit against Eli Lilly and Co. for allegedly failing to adequately inform about the increased risk of blood clots associated with using Axiron and other low t medication.
The Axiron testosterone lawsuit alleges that Eli Lilly intentionally deceived people into believing the testosterone gel was a safe and effective treatment for low testosterone while withholding details about life-threatening health risks.
Karl claims in the testosterone lawsuit that he suffered a life-threatening blood clot due to taking the low t medication. He said he took Axiron from October 2013 through March 2014 to treat his low testosterone.
His case joins dozens of other low t medication lawsuits accusing manufacturers of downplaying the risks of testosterone side effects.
What is Axiron?
Axiron is a gel applied to the underarms which can increase serum levels of testosterone. Axiron is only approved to treat low testosterone in conjunction with one of the following medical conditions:
- Hypogonadism
- Genetic problems with testosterone production
- Chemotherapy
- Problems with brain (hypothalmus or pituitary) that control testosterone
- Missing or damaged testicles
Low T Medication Warning
Federal drug regulators are requiring the manufacturers of Axiron and other low t medication to add new warnings about the link between blood clots and testosterone replacement therapy, including an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism
In 2014, the FDA suggested that additional information about the risk of blood clots be added to testosterone drug labels, indicating that the low t medications may cause venous thromboembolism (VTE).
The statement comes as the FDA continues to investigate the potential link between testosterone and heart problems, following studies earlier this year that suggested men using the “Low T” drugs may face an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death.
The FDA warning notes that these blood clots appear to be a different problem than those that may be causing testosterone users to suffer heart attacks and strokes.
