Pharmaceutical giants Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Inc. are facing a new Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit after a grieving widow alleges her husband died as a result of the companies’ blood thinner.
Tennessee widow Bambi K. is filing this Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit after her husband, Marshall K. had died due to Eliquis bleeding complications.
According to the Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit, her husband’s demise was directly caused by the medication and that his death was completely preventable.
Marshall had been prescribed Eliquis to treat his atrial fibrillation, which is a common use for the drug. Eliquis is also popularly prescribed to patients who are at high risk for stroke, and is used to prevent blood clot formation.
Bambi states that Marshall had used the drug for its intended purpose, and had followed all physician advice and directions provided by the drug’s safety label.
Even though Marshall had followed all these directions, it did not stop him from suffering an Eliquis bleeding event soon after starting the prescription, Bambi stated.
Marshall had suffered an Eliquis internal bleeding event on Sept. 01, 2015, and died the same day due to an intracerebral hemorrhage.
Bambi is filing this Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of her husband, stating there were no warnings or indications of uncontrollable bleeding events on the Eliquis warning label.
Overview of Eliquis Bleeding Complications
Eliquis is the most recent addition to the line of new generation anticoagulants, each of which are mean to compete against each other and original blood thinner warfarin.
Approved by the FDA in 2012, Eliquis was produced a joint effort between Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Inc. and has proven to be successful.
Like its counterparts, Eliquis is prescribed to prevent blood clot events in patients who may be at risk risk for thromboembolic events.
However Eliquis has run into the same complications its earlier new generation anticoagulants, Pradaxa and Xarelto, which has allegedly resulted in numerous internal bleeding events.
Even though each of the new generation anticoagulants were advertised to be more convenient and overall superior to warfarin, each of them lacked an established bleeding antidote.
In the case of internal bleeding events, warfarin patients can implement vitamin K to stop the bleeding.
In addition, warfarin patients were required to frequently visit their physicians for dose adjustments and were under close medical monitoring. Eliquis and other new generation anticoagulants do not have easily accessible bleeding antidotes, and are prescribed in a single dose.
Eliquis and other blood thinners work by inhibiting the body’s clotting mechanism, which prevents blood clot formation but disables the body’s ability to recover from internal bleeding events.
Even though this is a serious complication, Pfizer and Bristol Myers Squibb allegedly failed to warn Marshall and other Eliquis patients.
