Skechers UPDATE: Skechers Toning Shoes Settlement checks were mailed July 12, 2013.

A federal judge yesterday approved a $40 million class action lawsuit settlement with Skechers USA Inc. over claims it used deceptive ads that falsely claimed its toning shoes could help people lose weight and strengthen muscles.

On May 13, U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell granted final approval to the Skechers class action settlement, which will provide cash reimbursements to Class Members who submitted valid claims.

More than 520,000 claims were filed for the Skechers toning shoe settlement, which will provide the following benefits:

  • $27 – $50 for podded sole shoes
  • $20 – $40 for Tone-ups (non-podded sole)
  • $42 – $80 for Resistance Runners

The approval comes nearly a year after Skechers reached a deal with the Federal Trade Commission over ads for the toning shoes, which the FTC said misled consumers into believing the footwear would help them lose weight and tone muscles.

Payments from the Skechers class action lawsuit settlement will likely be issued late summer, according to the Settlement Administrator.

The claims filing deadline was April 18, 2013.

I loved mine when I first bought the shape-ups. They like walking on air. Then problems started…tripping & falling….they make you lose your balance, tore all the muscle & tendons in my left foot. Have lost muscle all the way up through my thighs. Would never have purchased them if I would have the damage it causes ahead if time.

  2. Claire says:

I have receipts for the 3 pairs of shape-ups I purchased. When will they request them, if at all?

From the web site (for those who do not know how to click links):

    “Notice: May 13, 2013

The settlement was given final approval on May 13, 2013. It will likely be late summer before checks are issued. Please check back for updates.

Please note the claims deadline was April 18, 2013 and claims can no longer be submitted online. Claims postmarked after April 18, 2013 will not be accepted.

Some TV stations are giving out incorrect information about filing claims. It really is too late to file a claim now. The online claims website has been disabled because the claims deadline has passed. “

  10. Blaine says:

Wonder if a claim by a Canadian who purchased shape up’s in the USA will be paid under the settlement? The claim form appeared to only allow US residents to claim as it had no space for a Cdn postal code or Province for instance.
