Pfizer Inc. and Bristol-Myers Squibb faces new Eliquis bleeding lawsuit from an Indiana woman alleging near-fatal internal bleeding complications.
According to her Eliquis bleeding lawsuit, the claimant alleges the pharmaceutical companies failed to warn her against potentially fatal bleeding events.Plaintiff Madeleine S. is filing her Eliquis bleeding lawsuit after reportedly experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia in March 2015. Prior to her internal bleeding experiences, Madeleine had no knowledge of those possibilities nor were they mentioned on the Eliquis warning label, she states.
Madeleine had been prescribed Eliquis to prevent stroke and other clotting risks and had followed all prescription instructions and physician’s advice while taking the medication. Even with this diligence, Madeleine still allegedly suffered internal bleeding complications.
Madeleine alleges the companies either knew or should have known of these potential complications.
Overview of Eliquis Bleeding Complications
Eliquis is a popular new generation anticoagulant that was approved by the FDA in 2012. Prior to Eliquis’s release, the FDA had some concerns regarding the results of pre-clinical trials. The agency was concerned the results had been tampered with to increase the likelihood of the FDA approval.
Even with this setback, Pfizer Inc. and Bristol-Myers Squibb successfully broke into the anticoagulant market and were met with market success. Even with competition from predecessors Pradaxa and Xarelto, Eliquis managed to become a strong competitor in the new generation anticoagulant line.
Each of these medications was released to compete with each other, as well as the original blood thinner, wafarin. Before the release of Pradaxa in 2010, warfarin was the primary choice patients had for blood thinner treatment. Pradaxa quickly gained popularity due to its convenient one dose prescription regimen, which contrasted to the frequent dose adjustments warfarin required.
Howeve, unlike the newer anticoagulants, warfarin had a readily available reversal agent in the case of internal bleeding. Even though newer anticoagulants were marketed as more efficient, manufacturing companies allegedly failed to warn the public against uncontrollable internal bleeding and the lack of a reversal agent.
Madeleine and many other patients had agreed to take Eliquis based on the marketing materials presented by the manufacturers. These marketing materials allegedly presented all the benefits of Eliquis, while allegedly not giving adequate explanation of the side effects.
Madeleine states that she would never have taken Eliquis if she had known about potentially fatal internal bleeding complications.
