Daiichi Sankyo is facing a new Benicar HCT lawsuit from a Massachusetts woman alleging she suffered serious injuries from the hypertension medication.
Plaintiff Willona P. claims the Benicar HCT side effects she experienced included chronic diarrhea and chronic intestinal impairment, causing long term nutritional problems.
She is filing this Benicar HCT lawsuit after suffering chronic diarrhea, sprue like enteropathy and other similar damages.
Willona was prescribed the medication in 2008, and experienced Benicar HCT side effects soon after including chronic diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal pain.
She also claims she incurred numerous medical bills for her treatment, and states she now must be on a gluten free diet.
Overview of Benicar and Benicar HCT Side Effects
When Benicar side effects were starting to become a major concern in the medical world, many patients and their physicians started exploring the causes of chronic diarrhea. Chronic diarrhea is one of the most well known Benicar HCT side effects, with many patients experiencing this symptom soon after starting the medication.
However there are many causes of chronic diarrhea. Without other knowledge, many doctors were pointing to Celiac disease when Benicar patients first started complaining. With many patients experiencing other symptoms also similar to Celiac disease, such as sprue like enteropathy and villous atrophy, it became the default diagnosis for Benicar patients.
This changed, however, in August 2012, when the Mayo Clinic identified dozens of Benicar patients experiencing Celiac disease symptoms between 2008 and 2011.
Once these patients discontinued the medication their symptoms improved, leading researchers to suspect Benicar, and its variants like Benicar HCT, may be causing the chronic diarrhea. After the FDA reviewed the data from the Mayo Clinic, it issued a public warning in July 2013 against Benicar side effects.
The agency warned patients that Benicar and other Olmesartan based medications, including Benicar HCT, may cause chronic intestinal damage and chronic diarrhea problems. The FDA also stated these side effects can be life threatening, after noting cases of extreme weight loss and nutritional deficiency.
Even though most cases of Benicar side effects resolve themselves, there have been cases of permanent intestinal damage. While these complications can be life changing, Daiichi Sankyo did not include chronic diarrhea or intestinal damage on Benicar’s warning label.
Willona’s Benicar HCT lawsuit is joining a number of other claims, alleging similar injuries to what she experienced.
By having her Benicar HCT lawsuit join a multidistrict litigation (MDL), Willona eliminates the chances of conflicting ruling from different judges and experiences an overall improvement in convenience during this process.
This Benicar HCT lawsuit is filed within In re: Benicar (Olmesartan) Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2606, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage.
