Bayer HealthCare is facing a new Mirena pseudotumor lawsuit from a young woman alleging the long term contraceptive had induced painful side effects. This Mirena pseudotumor lawsuit alleges the birth control product had caused her to experience painful headaches and possibly induced long-term complications.
Plaintiff Katie L. is filing this Mirena pseudotumor lawsuit, claiming she began experiencing highly painful headaches soon after having the device implanted. Katie had the Mirena IUS (intrauterine system) implanted on May 30, 2011 by her physician, opting for it after reviewing Bayer’s marketing materials.
However, soon after the device was implanted Katie reportedly began experiencing several side effects, including intense headaches, double vision, ringing in her ears, and dizziness. Based on the symptoms Katie experienced, she was later referred to a specialist to evaluate whether or not she had pseudotumor cerebri (PTC).
Katie says she was officially diagnosed with the condition on July 20, 2015, and filed the Mirena pseudotumor lawsuit soon after. Katie alleges her pseudotumor cerebi was directly caused by the Mirena birth control device, and that Bayer HealthCare failed to disclose this information.
At all times relevant, Katie and her physician had relied on the market materials presented by Bayer HealthCare which allegedly failed to properly disclose potential side effects.
Overview of Mirena PTC Complications
The Mirena IUD is a T-shaped device that is directly inserted into the patient’s uterus. It consists of copper components and the hormone levonorgestrel.
This device has been highly popular among women for years, as it can stay inside the patient for five years. With this device in place, sperm to egg fertilization is prevented and the hormone levels in the woman are leveled.
This device was approved by the FDA in 2000 and has been used by millions of women. However, the Mirena device has been linked to a number of serious side effects, including pseudotumor cerebri.
This condition develops when the cerebrospinal fluid levels inside the brain increase to dangerous levels, which often causes severe headaches and other side effects. Cerebrospinal fluid normally protects the skull and spine, but it can cause headaches when the body does not filter the fluid fast enough.
At this time, it is not known how Mirena can induce PTC, but it has been noted that using the long term birth control may increase cerebrospinal fluid. Experts have noted PTC symptoms are similar to tumor symptoms, especially with severe headaches and blurry vision.
There are a number of treatment options available from pain medications to using a shunt to drain the cerebrospinal fluid.
Even though these side effects can compound the patient’s condition, Bayer allegedly failed to warn the public. Katie is filing this Mirena pseudotumor lawsuit for multiple counts of negligence and failure to warn.
This Mirena Pseudotumor Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-03271-SDW-LDW, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Newark Division.
