LG Dishwasher LED Control Panel Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Mark Wheeler filed a class action lawsuit against LG Electronics USA, Inc.
  • Why: Wheeler claims LG knowingly sells some of its QuadWash-enabled dishwashers with defective LED control panels.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

LG Electronics USA knowingly sells certain dishwashers containing defective LED control panels, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Mark Wheeler claims some of LG’s QuadWash-enabled dishwashers are eventually rendered “inoperable” due to the alleged LED control panel defect.

Wheeler claims moisture is able to penetrate the LED control panels and damage the electronic parts within them on account of the defect.

The water damage eventually renders the dishwasher’s control panel “unresponsive” and makes it so that it can no longer be used to “commence a wash cycle as expected or intended,” the LG class action alleges.

Wheeler claims LG has known about the defect since at least 2015 due to receiving consumer complaints but yet has failed to either remedy the issue or disclose it to the public.

“Although LG has long known, or had reason to know, that Class Dishwashers’ Control Panels are Defective and are unfit for their ordinary and intended purpose and incapable of performing as warranted, LG failed to disclose and actively concealed this material fact from Plaintiffs and the Class,” the LG class action states.

LG Class Action Claims Replacement Dishwasher Part Also Likely Fail

Wheeler argues the only way for a consumer to be able to continue using the dishwasher is to replace the control panel with a “non-defective replacement component,” which will also “likewise fail shortly after installation.”

“Because LG repairs Class Dishwashers using defective Control Panels that are doomed to fail, its warranty offers little in the way of actual relief and fails of its essential purpose,” the LG class action states.

Further, Wheeler argues LG adds “insult to injury” by claiming the defect does not exist after its one-year “labor and parts” warranty ends, at which point he says the company declines to offer further coverage.

Wheeler claims LG is guilty of breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability and is in violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Wheeler wants to represent a nationwide class and California subclass of consumers who have purchased one or more of an affected LG QuadWash-enabled dishwasher.

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with compensatory and punitive damages for himself and all class members.

LG agreed to pay $1.5 million last year to resolve claims it sold defective refrigerators that failed to maintain the temperature level necessary to preserve perishables such as food and medicine.

  2. Rose M Lopez says:

Purchased LG Direct Drive Quad Dishwasher from Home Depot Model number LDT 7797ST October 2018 cost $900 Top control panel cracked water seeped in and control panel won’t work also about 6 months prior washer would not turn on had to keep plugging off and on. Please add me to lawsuit

  3. Faye Cosson says:

I have an LG Model: LDT56785T dishwasher purchased new from Lowe’s July 2019 for $569.05. Earlier this year I began having problems with the control panel blinking and “singing.” We were unable to stop the noise and lights until we flipped the breaker. Water would not pump out… I called the number in my owners manual 2 or 3 times in May 2022. Kept getting negative messages no help. (The manual says they could figure it out by connecting to WiFi. Which they were u able to do.) I want $570 to purchase a new dishwasher! I will never by another LG appliance.

  4. Kathleen Laru says:

I just found out that the LG dishwasher I paid $700 for 3 years ago would cost $612 to fix. LG told me the part would be warrantied but no one will do warranty work for them. So I will be buying a new dishwasher, definitely not LG.

  5. Susan Vitelli says:

I purchased my LG Quad wash dishwasher in 11/11/2020 from Home Depot.
In the past two weeks we had the dishwasher shut off before cycle is complete.,,first time water did not pump out.,..cleaned filter (was not dirty), no error code. Ran Delicate cycle to complete the wash.
Happened again today, shut down before cycle completed, nearly all water pumped out, ran the Delicate cycle again to finish the wash. I am thinking it is the start of an issue….the issue you are suing the company about. I don’t have $700 just to throw away after 2 years. Sad.

  6. Scherie Thomas says:

After a year of owning the dishwasher, the board needed replaced, 2 years later it happened again. Was quoted $425 to fix it…not worth it. LG needs to give me a dishwasher.

  7. Jennifer Frey says:

LDP6797BD control panel just stopped working out of nowhere, unit is 4 years old. Will be contacting LG, but not hopeful after reading the comments :(

    1. Tom Whittington says:

We purchased a LG dishwasher in 2018 from the Home Depot. We have experienced multiple flashing of the control board. Contacted service and couldn’t get anyone to service it in the Nancy Ky area. Now the board no longer works or flashes but shuts off in the middle of cycles. Model # LDF5545BD

  8. sara rynders says:

Add me. on hold with LG now but they are refusing to replace it out of warranty.

  9. Jay says:

I have the same problem with an LG model LDP6797BD. Unit won’t power on. Previously it worked for a couple months, quit for a week or so, the. Began working. Won’t power on at all now. LG blames the plumber who installed it, despite the thousands of others with the same exact dishwasher. I guess that incompetent plumber really gets around!

    1. Michelle Dodge Meitler says:

My three year old LG model LDF5545BD had been acting quirky over the past month or so. It would stop and ping like the door had been opened mid cycle, but was closed. Occasionally I thought I smelled burning plastic. Well, last Friday there actually was burning plastic, the dishwasher control panel was on fire, as well as my countertop and a nearby dish towel. LG will be getting a call from me, likely will get me nowhere, even with a fire. 🤞We’re so fortunate my fiancé arrived home when he did to put it out. I was home, just outside mowing the lawn. So scary!! What’s most frustrating is there hasn’t been a recall. Shame on LG!

  10. Tae Lee says:

Add me. I have lg quadwash dishwasher. Mine started to turn off in mid wash. Also my control panel is not working and no lights are coming on.
