Invega, also known generically as paliperidone, is an antipsychotic drug that is prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders in patients 12 and older. It is also used for off-label treatment of many other conditions.
It is not a recommended medication for psychotic symptoms by older adults diagnosed with any type of dementia.
The drug has gained notoriety in recent years, however, because of its purported tendency to cause Invega male breast growth, an often-humiliating side effect in which breasts develop in male patients and sometimes even have discharge from the nipple region.
What Causes Invega Male Breast Growth?
Invega male breast growth is an unfortunate side of this antipsychotic drug.
The drug works by decreasing and leveling out amounts of dopamine in the brain tissue. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for movement of signals across gaps in neurons or brain cells. When it is produced in excess, it can cause problems such as hallucinations, delusions, or abnormal disorganized thinking.
When the production of dopamine is held back, however, doctors believe that the restraint on the pituitary gland located at the anterior base of the right and left hemispheres of the brain is lifted. The gland is stimulated and produces prolactin, the hormone that is responsible for normal breast growth in women and Invega male breast growth in those on the drug.
Hormone balance is a tricky element. As it is with testosterone, present in both males and females but operating in much higher concentrations in males, prolactin exists in both sexes but generally is higher in the female.
The prolactin increase can not only cause Invega male breast growth to a very visible and socially humiliating degree, but it can cause the breast tissue to produce milk and the nipples to lactate or become painful and discharge in some manner.
