HyundaiHyundai has agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement with U.S. customers who say they were misled into buying Hyundai vehicles based on window stickers that contained overinflated fuel economy figures.

The amount of the Hyundai fuel economy settlement, filed yesterday in Los Angeles federal court, was not disclosed, but court documents show the proposed deal will provide Hyundai owners the option of a lump-sum payment. Hyundai’s sister company, Kia – which was also sued for overstating MPG estimates – is reportedly evaluating whether to join the class action lawsuit settlement.

The South Korean automakers were sued late last year after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the companies had overstated the gas mileage on over a third of their 2011-2013 model-year vehicles, including the Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Soul. The EPA forced the companies to lower the vehicles’ MPG ratings on their window stickers by one to six miles per gallon.

The automakers blamed the discrepancies on “procedural errors” at a joint testing facility in South Korea.

Over 35 consumer lawsuits were filed against Hyundai and Kia over what is being dubbed “MPG Gate.”

I have a 2013 Hyundai accent and I too purchased it for the gas mileage. On top of that, the paint job is cheap, the transmission is funky, the key sticks in the ignition, and a front under panel keeps coming off. I HATE the car now and was lied to when I purchased it. I am going to find out about the lawsuit, but am also thinking about, and going to look into, suing them myself rather than be included in this class action lawsuit. I encourage each of you to do the same. A similar lawsuit was waged against Honda recently, and the woman won and it was a much better settlement than this crap or the class action one against them. I’m looking for a lawyer now.

    1. Mikaela says:

Did you ever find a lawyer for that Hyundai?

  5. Gayle Romanelli says:

I would love to know how to join the lawsuit for my 2013 Hyundai Elantra.

  6. Brook Simpson says:

Wish I knew how to be included in this class action suit! I purchased a 2013 Hyundai Elantra mainly due to impressive gas mileage. To later be told from the dealership (NOT the manufacturer) and to have received a gas reimbursement of $29.00 later… I am not a happy camper.

  7. nancy says:

how do i sign up for the class action suit?

i purchased my sonata because of the gas consumption
    on the window sticker.

  8. Eileen says:

I have a 2010 Elantra. I agree they should go further back. I thought it was me..calculating wrong. But, I see I wasn’t.

  9. Gail Rich says:

I have a 2008 Vera Cruz Limited and do not get close to the mileage the sticker claims it to be……….Highway is not much different than everyday driving around town………..

  10. Cathie Cima says:

I currently own 2 Hyundai 2208 Sonata which
I believe should be included in the MPG, we have watched over time especially when going on vacation get no where close to what sticker
    SAID!!
Now last week my Husband got the 2013
Genesis Sedan, after his 2010 Genesis Coupe
was eating a lot of gas!! I wonder now about the Sedan, we will be watching. They really should go back at least 10 years to check and see MPG per there sticker quotes??
This I think goes for all makers of cars, any
way they can screw you they will??
What would it take for us to fight to have MPG
checked for the past ten years? I am more
willingly to start a class action lawsuit…
    Illinois.
