Gateway LX6810 Cooling System Class Action
By Kimberly Mirando

GatewayDozens of consumers have complained about their Gateway LX6810 desktop computers overheating and randomly freezing, crashing or shutting down, causing them to lose valuable data in addition to time and money fixing the problem. Now a recently filed class action lawsuit is accusing Gateway, Inc. of violating state business laws by marketing, selling and refusing to recall or repair the LX6810 computers, even though they know the computers have a defective cooling system.

Four plaintiffs from Texas, New Hampshire, Illinois and California filed the consolidated Gateway LX6810 class action lawsuit, alleging that an inherent defect in the desktop computers causes them to overheat under normal operating conditions, resulting in the computer suddenly freezing, crashing or shutting down completely. This allegedly occurs because the computer’s cooling fan does not sufficiently cool its central processing unit (CPU) and/or component parts. According to the Gateway LX6810 class action, the defective cooling system begins to manifest itself within only a few months of the beginning of its use, forcing users to incur out-of-pocket costs and time attempting to resolve the cooling system defect.

Plaintiffs in the class action accuse Gateway of knowing about the cooling system defect but of refusing to recall the Gateway LX6810 desktop computer or permanently repairing the defective cooling system at its own expense. They are seeking certification of a nationwide class of U.S. consumers who currently own or lease, or previously owned or leased, a Gateway LX6810 desktop computer. If certified, the Gateway defective cooling system class action lawsuit will be seeking damages, restitution, attorneys’ fees, and other awards in the class action settlement.

My Gateway LX NEVER shut down, bough the rig in Feb 2009 and its now Nov 2013. I insalled an internal (Pull)Fan and an external (Blow Fan) shortly after noticing the case’s poor venting design. NEVER HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM and my PC is still to this day humming along like a boss!
    Thanks Gateway!!! :-)

I had, still have, use it as a doorstop, Gateway laptop. It overheats something aweful and I bought the extra cooling. Didn’t work in first 30 days and company kept telling me since I had a “ticket” the 30 day return didn’t apply. After going round and round with them, even hiring a really good computer guy to fix I gave up and tried to return. THEN they said my 30 days were up reneging on their promise. Clearly I was an idiot for believing and what they did was criminal. Filed a complaint with California Attorney General only to find they would not represent unless I lived in CA. Many hours and about $1,800 later I have an old doorstop that I keep on a shelf ever reminding me to never buy a Gateway again and to never believe a customer service reps over the phone.
They were so good at stringing me along that I suspect I am not the only one. IF anybody starts a class action on their worthless laptops–please include me in. Thanks and good luck.

I purchased a Gateway All-In-One Model ZX4000 series that died on me last year due to the computer over heating and screen going blank. I sent it back to Acer (Gateway) but they returned it unrepaired stating they couldn’t fix it due to foreign substance in the component which voided my warranty. How this company stays in business is beyond me but I’ll NEVER purchase another Gateway/Acer computer. I’ll like to know if there’s a class action lawsuit for the All-In-Ones too, because I’ll like to join.

Found an alternate solution. But i must suggest to buy 2 more small 20mm fans if you notice there is no fan where they should be when you open your machine. i also suggst to keep your fans dust free until then. Onward, when you power on the machine(even if you have like 5 seconds before it shuts off) hit the F2 button it should take you to a blue screen(if not F2 then F10 or F9) once you get the blue screen go to “PC health status” at the bottom you should see “Smart Fan” scroll down and “Disable” it. Save & Exit. Your fan will be running harder but could be an alternate solution until you have bought new fans. I am truley upset as well that gateway hasnt resolved my issue they fixed it for free only because i had a warranty. but after 1 week of it returned icomp started shutting off. so i dug around and found the smart fan. i hope this helps someone this post might be too little to late…good luck

Mine failed to operate/bootup in April 2009. I spent hours attempting to restart it before putting it on the shelf. Just recently (July 2011) I tried again for about three days. I bought Windows 7 as a last resort and to no avail. It’s now in the shop. They got it up and running for about 30 minutes. The tv/tuner card got very hot and the monitor went black. It’s still in the shop. Obvious heat issues and I’m now trying to see what Gateway may be forced to do to resolve the issues w/ the LX6810-01. It’s the last Gateway I’ll ever buy.

I haven’t tried it yet but a lot of people are suggesting to buy a fan because the system does not include any case fans.
