Ford seatbelt recall overview:

  • Who: Ford Motor Co. recalled more than 77,000 of its model year 2018-2020 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.
  • Why: The automaker initiated the recall over concerns the vehicles were equipped with potentially defective front and/or passenger seat belts.
  • Where: The recall impacts certain Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicle owners nationwide.

A new Ford seat belt recall affects more than 77,000 model year 2018-2020 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.

The Ford recall involves 77,574 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt retractor pretensioners that were built between Oct. 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019.

Ford said it is concerned the front and/or passenger seat belts in the recalled vehicles could fail to retract or extend, potentially leading to an injury in the event of a crash.

“Inadvertent deployment of the retractor pretensioner will result in the seatbelt being locked in position and will not retract or extend, which is noticeable to the occupant,” the Ford seat belt recall states.

Ford replacing seat belt pretensioner assemblies

Ford is contacting owners of the recalled vehicles by mail with instructions to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the production codes inspected on both of the front seat belt retractors, with replacements made as necessary, according to the Ford recall.

The automaker said the replacement pretensioner assemblies were made outside of the time window for the seat belts that showed “the propensity for inadvertent deployment.”

The Ford seat belt recall says the company notified dealerships Feb. 12 and plans to begin sending notification letters to vehicle owners March 4.

Ford initiated a separate recall last month for nearly 1.9 million of its model year 2011-2019 Ford Explorer vehicles over concerns their windshield trim could fall off because of a defective retention clip.
