Avastin eye injectionFloaters after Avastin injection have been reported by numerous patients across the country. These floaters have been allegedly caused by the silicone oil lubricating the syringes used for Avasting injection. After the silicone oil intermixes with the medication, it can enter the eyeball and potentially develop floaters after Avastin injection.

Sometimes described as air bubbles in the eye, these Avastin floaters can lead to permanent damages and potentially deadly bacterial infections.

Avastin (bevacizumab) is a medication that is FDA-approved for cancer treatment but is often used for off-label treatments of certain eye-related ailments. This is because the drug’s treatment mechanism inhibits certain irregular blood vessels from developing, making it a suitable treatment option for conditions such as:

  • Macular Degeneration
  • Retinal Vein Occlusion
  • Diabetic Macular Edema
  • Diabetic Retinopathy

Many patients have alleged these off-label treatment uses have led to patients developing floaters after Avastin injection. The drug was not originally developed or packaged for eye injections, and the preparation process for Avastin syringes may not be suitable for eye injections.

While doctors do prescribe Avastin eye injections regularly, they are becoming increasingly concerned over potential floaters after Avastin injection.

Overview of Avastin Eye Injections Complications

Avastin eye injections are prepared by compound pharmacies, which are then shipped to optometrists to be used on patients. During the preparation process, the syringes are coated with a silicone oil used as a lubricant.

It is recommended that these injections are used as soon as possible, as a longer wait time increases the chances of floaters after Avastin injection. This is because the silicone oil has time to intermix with the drug, which can then get injected into the eye with Avastin.

But sometimes these pre-filled Avastin eye injections can sit around for days or weeks in storage or shipping, making immediate use impossible. The chances are even higher when the Avastin injections are frozen before use, as the silicone particles are suddenly released into the treatment medication.

Floaters from Avastin injection can lead to a number of different eyesight-related complications, including:

  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • Inflammation
  • Infection (endophthalmitis)
  • Retinal Tearing
  • Retinal Detachment
  • Cataract Formation
  • Glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
  • Hypotony (reduced pressure in the eye)
  • Corneal Damage
  • Vision loss/blindness

Overall, floaters after Avastin injection should be reported as soon as possible so doctors can limit the damage and to allow patients to have the most treatment options.

In addition, Avastin complications can develop into potentially fatal bacterial infections, which were reported by several patients in Florida and Tennessee in 2011. One patient lost their vision completely, while another patient developed brain damage because the infection spread to his brain.

These reported Avastin eye infections spurred the FDA to issue a recall of syringes prepared at certain pharmacies, stating the bacterial contamination may have occurred during the preparation process.
