Equifax Data Breach Extended Claim Class Action Settlement Overview: 

  • Who: Consumers can make a claim to join a $425 million Equifax data breach settlement during an extended claims period that runs through Jan. 22, 2024. 
  • Why: Claimants can be reimbursed for time spent recovering from the data breach or money lost or spent due to the data breach during the time of the extended claim period.
  • Where: Consumers nationwide are part of the class affected by the Equifax data breach.

Consumers still facing injury from a massive Equifax data breach in 2017 can file a claim during an extended claim period for the $425 million settlement through Jan. 22, 2024. 

The settlement was made to benefit the estimated 147 million Equifax customers who were affected by the September 2017 data breach, which exposed customers’ personal and financial information and involved nearly half of the U.S. population.

Equifax agreed to the settlement to resolve customers’ claims that it had failed to implement proper cybersecurity measures to prevent the data breach and keep their private information safe. 

The initial claim period ended in January 2020; however, customers who still want to file a claim, or make an additional one, can do so. 

Consumers who are eligible to file a claim during the extended period have either spent time recovering from the breach or lost or spent money due to the breach during the extended period. 

Supporting documents will need to be included to show the money lost or spent, and, if more than 10 hours in total, the time spent recovering from the data breach during the extended claim period. 

In addition to the proper documentation, consumers looking to file a claim must fill out a form detailing their information and any claim numbers from ones made during the initial claim period. 

Equifax Claimants Can’t Have Been Reimbursed ‘Through Other Means’

Consumers eligible to receive reimbursement for claims made during the extended period can also not have “received reimbursement for the claimed loss through other means,” according to the official website for the Equifax breach settlement. 

Losses that are eligible for claim during the extended claim period must have occurred between Jan. 23, 2020 (the day after the end of the initial claim period), and Jan. 22, 2024.

For time spent, claimants may be eligible for reimbursement for up to 20 hours, at a rate of $25 per hour, for time spent recovering from issues directly related to the data breach, such as fraud, identity theft or other misuse of personal financial information. 

Individuals looking to recover out-of-pocket losses incurred during the extended claim period, meanwhile, can be eligible to receive financial reimbursement of up to $20,000.

Claimants during the extended claim period will also be eligible to receive up to seven years of free identity restoration services, starting from the day the settlement went into effect on Jan. 11, 2022. 

A separate class action settlement was made this month by Herff Jones, which agreed to pay $4.35 million to resolve claims revolving around a 2021 data breach.

    I am one of the original data breach litigants from 2017. Today I received $17.61 as a settlement for time spent trying to fix accounts affected by the breach. I claimed 20 hours, though it was much more time in invested but I had no written proof. I am disgusted and offended with this payment and will be returning it. What an insult!

    Pathetic and shameful. Good luck to any others that were affected.

      Add me to this data breach please.. I have a issued check that’s never been cashed. The check was written out for 8 dollars and some change.. I would like to be properly compensated for all 3 breaches..

      I was in this data breach. I even know the people that use my identity I have credit cards furniture. I’m even received unemployment. In my name and I’m still dealing with it! Equifax also gave someone a job using my Social Security number, and I am disabled, and very sick

    EQUIFAX is reporting 14 charge-off accounts on my consumer reports, I have tried several time to get EQUIFAX to removed the accounts, unfortunately they have refused all my complaints with CFPB. Because of their false furnishing on my consumer report, have cause me to get denied for my own credit and apartment to live. This has cause me so much Stress.

I lost 1970 Bitcoin shares bank accounts the drain from Wells Fargo’s US Bank chime Bank of America PayPal coinbase you name it it happened.. with no help no relief more than $400,000 drain out of my account credit score dropped from a 799 or wait till 4:50 multiple grants and SBA loan opportunities decline because of credit scores and literally lost grant for $750,000 and loan Force $325,000 SBA loan

    I added myself to the first round of requests for restoration/reimbursement claims after having my identity stolen and used by someone else to commit crimes while posing as me as a result of the data breach. Thankfully, I was able to freeze all of my credit reports and resolve the fraudulent applications for credit by disputing directly with the businesses where my stolen identity was used. I carefully documented the time I spent doing everything to mitigate further damages and all communications with merchants etc. only to have the class action adjuster “JND Legal Administration” notify me that my time and distress aren’t tangible proofs in support of my claim. There’s a reason JND is in the claims adjustment industry = Their job is to MINIMIZE payments to victims in order to save the Defendant “Equifax” from having to pay people that were harmed by the data breach. What a disgrace! Talk about adding insult to injury. I feel really bad for those who experienced serious life changing consequences after their identity was stolen.
