Pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb are facing a new Eliquis lawsuit after a woman experienced unexpected internal bleeding.
Along with her husband, this woman is filing legal action against the companies after allegedly experiencing Eliquis excessive bleeding.
Tennessee plaintiff couple Rhonda H. and James H. are filing this Eliquis lawsuit together, alleging the drug had caused near fatal harm and that the warning label lacked any language describing such a possible event.
Rhonda was prescribed Eliquis to treat her non-valvular atrial fibrillation which was meant to reduce the chances of stroke and prevent other blood clot attacks. Rhonda began using Eliquis in April 2015, and followed all prescription instructions and physician advice.
Even though Rhonda used the drug for its intended purpose and did not deviate from safety instructions, she still suffered Eliquis excessive bleeding in August 2015.
Even though Rhonda survived the Eliquis excessive bleeding, she and her husband were highly impacted by this event.
Rhonda and her husband state the pharmaceutical companies failed to properly disclose the risks associated with their product.
Overview of Eliquis Bleeding
Eliquis is the latest addition to the line of new generation anticoagulants which were designed to compete against each other and original blood thinner warfarin.
This medication was approved by the FDA in 2012 which was released as a joint effort between Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb.
During the time of its release, predecessor drugs Pradaxa and Xarelto came under heavy fire for unexpected internal bleeding injuries.
Reports of Eliquis excessive bleeding were soon submitted, with Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb facing similar allegations of negligence as the manufacturers of Pradaxa and Xarelto.
Each of these anticoagulants work by inhibiting the body’s clotting ability, maximizing circulation and preventing blood clots. However, this also prevents the body from recovering from minor internal bleeding injuries that can quickly progress into internal bleeding emergencies.
At this time, only warfarin has a widely available reversal agent for internal bleeding events. Even though this is important safety information, Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb allegedly omitted this information from their product’s warning label.
Rhonda states that she was unable to make a reasonable decision because vital safety information was withheld from her, and that the companies either knew or should have known of the risk of Eliquis excessive bleeding.
Rhonda insists she never would have taken Eliquis if she had known of the risk. She and her husband are seeking multiple counts of negligence, as well as false advertising and concealing vital safety information.
