UPDATE: See detailed instructions for how to file a claim for the LG French Door Refrigerator Class Action Settlement.

A federal court has approved a class action lawsuit settlement with LG that will provide “complete reimbursement” to consumers who purchased certain LG and Kenmore-branded French Door Refrigerators and had to pay to repair a defect that caused their interior lights to remain on when the doors were closed.

The LG refrigerator settlement covers more than 600,000 consumers who alleged in a class action lawsuit, entitled McLennan v. LG Electronics USA, Inc., that several LG refrigerator models had a faulty design that caused the interior lights to remain on even when the refrigerator doors were closed, resulting in overheating and food spoilage.

The LG refrigerator class action settlement will provide Class Members reimbursement of all out-of-pocket expenses they paid for parts and labor to repair the light issue for 10 years from the date of the original retail purchase of the refrigerator. The class action lawsuit settlement also provides an extended warranty that covers in-home refrigerator repair performed by LG and, in some cases, the cost of a replacement refrigerator.

In approving the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit settlement, U.S. District Judge William J. Martini said, “The Settlement in this case provides for both the complete reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for repairs fixing the Light Issue, as well as a warranty for ten years from the date of refrigerator purchase. It would be hard to imagine a better recovery for the Class had the litigation gone to trial. Because Class Members will essentially receive all of the relief to which they would have been entitled after a successful trial, this factor weighs heavily in favor of settlement.”

Class Members of the LG refrigerator class action settlement include U.S. residents who currently own or owned one or more of the defective LG or Kenmore French Door Refrigerators with a model number listed on page 1 of the class action settlement notice.

To receive your cash reimbursement from the LG, Kenmore refrigerator class action settlement, you must submit a claim form and proof of repair to the Settlement Administrator no later than November 7, 2012.

  1. Edward - North Port, Florida says:

We have a Sears Kenmore French Door refrigerator with two bottom freezer drawers and purchased on 2-9-2019 and completely failed on 11-27-20 due to a failed compressor according to the repair man we called. Repair man says they do not do warranty work so we have called Sears and they are making us wait 10 days for even to come out. All Food is lost. We are eating out of a cooler with ice bags. I wonder if other things beside the compressor since food in our freezer top section were melting and frost was coming out of the drawer opening. Maybe the light is on too? Clearly, a strong class action suit is needed to hold LG and Sears accountable for this badly made product with mutliple problems Please get me to the law firm who will be leading this.

  2. Shirley Anderson Crear says:

We purchased our Kenmore on August 24, 2019 and it began having problems in June 2020:
    1. Stop cooling at the top.
    2. Bottom began over defrosting.
    3. Ice machine stop working.
    4. Alot of spoil food.
    5. I had to wait atleast 3 weeks before parts came in. Installed finally.

October, 2020, I began having the same problems, technician stated they need to order another part for the defroster. Alot of spoil food again. The company that supplies the part will not have it in stock until November 30, 2020. No refrigerator for the Thanksgiving Holidays.

This is a Kenmore Refrigerator which is well known for manufacturing reliable products; but this refrigerator came off the assembly line with alot of problems

We would like to be apart of a Class Action Suit..

  3. Murad Sikander says:

Bought Kenmore elite 5 yrs ago about 1300 dollars ,bottom freezer, double door fridge. Since Sept 2018 had made 4 service calls and paid twice 100 dollars for those calls. Technician will tell you a different story every time from faulty compressor to leak . now it came down to the condenser and the cost is 400 dollars. i will be interested in a lawsuit against sears ,Kenmore and now we know it is actually an LG brand. I will rather buy a anew one as suggested by the technician since they see problems with kenmore all the time. Extremely frustrated!!!

    1. Viktor Taushanov says:

We have the same issue and I would join the lawsuit.

    2. Lisa Lisa says:

I have one in my home right now that needs a kinder more gentler junk man.
I’ve gone to numerous used appliance dealers, and no one will touch it..
It is insane that all this hardware has failed, and we the people can do nothing about it…
Technology is supposed to have some expectation of longevity.
My washer and dryer, are still going after decades… and it’s old school.

Frickin Sears and LG are sleeping together.

    3. Marcia Wilhelmsen says:

ME TOO! MY Compressor went out on me… that was when I found out it was made by LG! The first Repair guy I called to look at it and repair it said he could not! Because of the LG PARTS! I had to call the # to order part… spent at least 2 hours being transfer here and there… no one speaking good English! Frustrating! They finally transferred me to SEARS here! I already knew what part I needed from the other repair guy but I still had to have Sears come out to verify part! So at that point I already spent $49.00 and than another $89.00! Waited for parts! Lost all kinds of food waiting for parts! 2.5 weeks later I had the parts and the fridge finally repaired costing another $322.48! So when said and done my $3200.00 fridge now has cost me approx $4000! Sears knew the LG parts were going to break and die and did not tell me it had a problem before I bought it! I had been a loyal customer to Sears since 1976 when I bought my first Kenmore Freezer! Washers and dryers over the years and Microwave! I am so upset with Sears now! They should have paid for the repair of the LG Compressor ! Lg sent the parts free of charge so Sears also should pay for the Labor cost since they knew!!! Customers should not have to keep buying extended warranties for products that should last for years! 3years and 7 months is not good quality!

  4. Ilene Vaughn says:

My Name is Ilene Vaughn. I bought the Kenmore Elite, there was absolutely nothing Elite about about this refrigerator. It is a piece of Junk, didn’t even last five years. SEARS IS ONLY INTERESTED In selling extended warranty. Would not recommend SEARS to the dogs. Worst company ever.

    1. Silva Donikian says:

I had the same issue with my Kenmore Elite! Ive spent an arm and a leg on warranties, and as soon as warranty expires, it has another issue, and we have to call a technician, and spend more money. Can anyone give me info on what they did to get some type of reimbursement/compensation for these junk refrigerators they are selling and not taking any responsibility (other than selling another year of warranty). Thanks

    2. Marcia Wilhelmsen says:

I agree… Same fridge! Very angry!

  5. Michael J Kincaid says:

My frig is less than 3 years old $2700. The compressor died. It was covered under warranty but the labor/service call was $342.40.

      1. Rhiannon says:

We purchased a Kenmore fridge in April 2012 having NO IDEA about any of this. Until the compressor went out the first time in 11/2013. And then again in 2014. And now AGAIN in 2018!! I am absolutely furious! They fixed it for free the first two times but are now saying we have to pay labor plus $99 for a diagnostic fee. For their faulty product! I am fighting this with all I have!

    2. Marcia Wilhelmsen says:

DO NOT BUY THE ELITE KENMORE REFRIGERATOR EVER! IT IS A PIECE OF JUNK!!! COMPRESSOR IS LG PART THEY HAVE TO ORDER… WAITED 2.5 WEEKS! ONLY HAD IT FOR 3YEARS 7 MONTHS! WHEN THE WARRANTY ENDS WATCH OUT! LOSS OF FOOD.. NO FRIDGE AND COST OF REPAIRS!

  6. angie Matevossian says:

I purchased Kenmore elite bottom freezer refrigerator from sears 2014. The first week all food got frozen, I called for service they came once and told me that compressor has defects. They did not replace the compressor . I called several times , but no response. My food is always freezing in all shelves. I did change the temperature to 46 degree still useless. Sears refuses to replace or repair the Junk that I paid $1400.00. They are not reliable and sold a junk.

  7. Daniel A McNabb says:

My name us Daniel McNabb. We purchased a new Kenmore LG side-by-side bottom freezer refrigerator summer of 2012 with the 5-year protection plan. We’ve had 14 service calls and that five years for that refrigerator, the last call three weeks before contract ended May 31st 2017 period during that. Because of all the service calls we had ice maker replacement computer replacement motherboard fan motors blowers you name it, I asked for another refrigerator because I thought that was a little bit and extreme to have 3/4 service calls a year but evidently if you don’t have 3 service calls in 12 months on the same problem you’re out of luck. The last call first week in May 2017 of this year, once more of the refrigerator frosted up blower stopped working and I had to call the service repairman out for my last call that I would be making under that contract. My food went bad and I tried to file a claim for a food loss for 250, but Sears informed me that I can only file one claim for food loss in 12 months. Or maybe six months. Anyway all my food went bad and it was my loss and their crappy Appliance. It’s been suggested to me that maybe I’ll be a little Kinder and not rent with resolution conflict and try to be nice and sugarcoat everything, like I might have done something wrong. My refrigerator is on this class action suit I checked the serial number. So now I’m waiting for farmed out Sears repairman to show up on the 27th less than four months after my contract ran out. You think that Sears will be trying to keep customers and maybe extend my contract another year or something but I don’t see that happening, because I really don’t think they really care at this stage of the game with all the market share they’re losing.

  8. dennis koch says:

I have a sears side by side refrigerator, we bought it in July of 2013 .this April the ice maker quit working, I called sears repair, and they came out ,.and replaced a valve .Well its Dec and I still don’t have any ice tomorrow this will be the 12th time they came out to fix it .Cant they just replace the dam thing . I even went to Sears today to try to talk to somebody there But I couldn’t find anyone to wait on me and there were 5 other people waiting too.

    1. Daniel A McNabb says:

sorry your ice maker quit Dennis. They replaced mine twice in the last 5 years. Three ice makers one refrigerator. But my frigerator LG side by side bottom freezer summer 2012 and warranty just ran out end of May this year and I have another service call pending with no warranty this time. It just doesn’t seem fair. and it doesn’t seem like Sears really wants to help me. I’ve been actually blamed for being a little callous with the resolution center and maybe I could get more bees with honey then with vinegar. Can you believe that? 14 service calls in 5 years and is broke again. Maybe Sears might consider telling LG and Samsung that if they don’t get their act together and start making refrigerators that don’t break down every four or five months, that they’re not going to use them for a supplier anymore, but it goes right back to I don’t think Sears really cares. Dan McNabb Hendersonville North Carolina

  9. Tina Cary says:

I too have recently experienced the issue of the lights staying on and the sockets are burned and the plastic cover melted to itself. What recourse do consumers have after the settlement date? I dont recall notification previously. I do not feel safe with my family in the house, I hate to think what could happen. This was a $2400 appliance!

    1. Sonia Hawkins says:

Call1-888-284-3334 if it is the LG
If its Kenmore ELite call 1-888-567-3438

      1. Paul watson says:

I bought a Kenmore Elite frig in April,2017 and a Sears repairman said our compressor is bad. He would replace it with a like product for $390. We want compensation for the $1500 frig. Who can help us?

    2. Kevin Gallardo says:

I have a Kenmore French door refrigerator that has stopped cooling. After reading into common issues this seems to be consistent with the recent class action lawsuits.
At this point a repair man says it is the compressor. Also, said could be the control board. Either way looking at a $1000 bill to fix. Sears and LG say out of warranty. It was purchased in 2017 from Sears.
      Model 79574033411
      Looking for some guidance.

  10. Marie Phelps says:

My ice maker does not work. I called to tell them and did no good. They just wanted to sell me an extension on my warranty and my frig is only 1 1/2 years old. Did not know anything about a class action suit. What do I do about the suit?
    Thanks.
