Court Approves Kenmore, LG Refrigerator Class Action Settlement
By Mike Holter
The LG refrigerator settlement covers more than 600,000 consumers who alleged in a class action lawsuit, entitled McLennan v. LG Electronics USA, Inc., that several LG refrigerator models had a faulty design that caused the interior lights to remain on even when the refrigerator doors were closed, resulting in overheating and food spoilage.
The LG refrigerator class action settlement will provide Class Members reimbursement of all out-of-pocket expenses they paid for parts and labor to repair the light issue for 10 years from the date of the original retail purchase of the refrigerator. The class action lawsuit settlement also provides an extended warranty that covers in-home refrigerator repair performed by LG and, in some cases, the cost of a replacement refrigerator.
In approving the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit settlement, U.S. District Judge William J. Martini said, “The Settlement in this case provides for both the complete reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for repairs fixing the Light Issue, as well as a warranty for ten years from the date of refrigerator purchase. It would be hard to imagine a better recovery for the Class had the litigation gone to trial. Because Class Members will essentially receive all of the relief to which they would have been entitled after a successful trial, this factor weighs heavily in favor of settlement.”
Class Members of the LG refrigerator class action settlement include U.S. residents who currently own or owned one or more of the defective LG or Kenmore French Door Refrigerators with a model number listed on page 1 of the class action settlement notice.
To receive your cash reimbursement from the LG, Kenmore refrigerator class action settlement, you must submit a claim form and proof of repair to the Settlement Administrator no later than November 7, 2012.

I recently(12/26/14) had the same issue with my LG Refrigerator and the light melted also causing extreme heat which also melted the inside top of the refrigerator. The light casings were all burnt, we removed the plastic cover and the light to find additional damage to the fridge where it was so hot that it melted and bubbled the top of the fridge on the inside. I am having a terrible time with LG and I have seen a large amount of complaints with the same issue and as recent as mine. I am thoroughly concerned that there was never a recall or were the consumers notified of an issue. Seems like they have been trying to hide from this as much as possible. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I also submitted an incident report to http://www.saferproducts.com. I have photos of the incident if necessary.
Thanks!

I have just started having this problem with my LG, I was never made aware of the class action lawsuit. The top of my refrigerator is melted and the panel has fallen down, all my food on the top shelve was cooked. I have unscrewed the lights so that they stay out. I was very fortunate that I could smell the burning and didn’t have a fire. Prior to the light problem all my drawers are broke and their lid doors are broke off. What recourse do I have to get this problem fixed.

So come to find out we have one of these refrigerators. The tech came out and repaired the light, I took pictures of the burn damage. I was not made aware of this problem until the tech advised me. Now my refrigerator does not cool at all, and all they want to offer me is $296 give me a break LG. I know there was a deadline for the suit, not sure if they extended it. I can only hope. I think about what would of happen if the entire fridge had caught fire.
I purchased my refrigerator 6 years ago, all the sudden stop working all my food was damage, all the drinks, everything was wrong, we try to fix it 3 times already and we are back to the begining , I contact LG Customer Interactive Center and nothing is being set, still waiting on some answer from the company, I’m really disappoint with this brand because you pay too much money hopping that you have a refrigerator for many years and is already gone, IS NOT WORTH IT. I’m waiting to see the answer in this situation from the company, is really frustrated
I too have had the melting lights, spoiled food, an ice maker that quit working and other little things with my LG French door refrigerator. Today I came in the kitchen and I noticed the odor. Of burning electric . I looked a around and discovered the problem with the lights. The lights got so hot they completely melt the housing that was holding them onto the ceiling of the unit. I had a lot of food go bad, and hereit is two days before thanksgiving. Best part of it all is that today is November 20th 2012. Just a few days past the deadline for submission. Wonderful, just wonderful. I am still going to try . What more do I have to lose? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I purchased a LG french door refrigerator with freezer on bottom. Its been one thing after another with it and I have only had it 5 1/2 years. First some of the plastic parts broke off, then it was the light issue, then the ice maker would work sporatically the finally quit all together. I have had to turn the ice maker off as there must be an electrical short somewhere in there. If I turn it on the LED display on the front by the ice/water dispenser acts wacky. So have had to make ice by putting trays in freezer. Since that has to be done frequently it sometimes gets water droplets in the freezer and around the sliding mechanism. Door got hard to open. Now because of repeated opening and closing and having to sometimes pull hard the left side of the freezer door is broke. I did not buy and extended warranty and when I called customer service and explained it to the girl, although she was very nice she was not helpful, she said to pull the drawer out all the way and slam it shut hard and that should fix the problem. She did not seem to understand the door was half on and half off and drawer could not be closed. She said she was sorry but there was nothing she could do. She gave me name and phone number of LG service company and I have been trying to reach them but only get recording.
I swear this is the worse piece of crap I have ever purchased. You would think if you paid almost $2500 for something that it would last longer than 5 1/2 years.
I had to have the light fixed twice. This last time after the “repair” the entire unit quit cooling. We lost hundreds of dollars worth of food. LG has done nothing but give me the run around. I want compensation.
