breakstone's cottage cheese

Kraft Heinz is issuing a voluntary recall of 9,500 cases of Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese sold in 16-ounce and 24-ounce containers over the potential contamination of red plastic and metal that may have occurred during production.

Kraft has received six complaints from customers who have noticed the pieces of plastic and metal in their cottage cheese containers. However, no report of injuries have occurred thus far.

Consuming plastic or metal could cause health issues including injuries to the throat, mouth, teeth, stomach or intestine tissues, the cottage cheese recall states.

According to Kraft, the following Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese products are included in this recall:

  • 16-ounce containers of “Breakstone’s 2% Milkfat Lowfat Large Curd Cottage Cheese” with a use by date of Dec. 10, 2019 and an individual package UPC of 0 21000 30053 2.
  • 24-ounce containers of “Breakstone’s 4% Milkfat Large Curd Cottage Cheese” with a use by date of Dec. 10, 2019 and an individual package UPC of 0 21000 12285 1.
  • 24-ounce containers of “Breakstone’s 4% Milkfat Small Curd Cottage Cheese” with a use by date of Dec. 10, 2019 and an individual package UPC of 0 21000 12284 4.

Customers who bought one of the recalled Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese products are encouraged to return it to the place of purchase for either a full refund or an exchange.

“We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed,” a statement from Kraft Heinz reads.

Kraft states that consumers with any questions regarding the Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese recall can call the company at 1-866-572-3805 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern. Consumers can also request a full refund from Kraft by calling this number.

Other Kraft Recalls

This isn’t the first recall Kraft Heinz has issued in recent years.

In 2015, the food company recalled more than 6.5 million boxes of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese over a similar risk of finding metal pieces included in the popular “original” flavor. No injuries were reported and the recall was voluntary.

Kraft also issued a recall of close to 1,000 pounds of ready-to-eat “Lunchables Ham and American Cracker Stackers” in 2016. This particular recall was over a risk of undeclared allergens. No illnesses were reported.

By 2018, Kraft announced a recall of its Taco Bell-brand cheese dip over concerns that the nacho condiment could be linked to the food poisoning botulism bacteria. According to Kraft, no illnesses were reported from the 15-ounce Taco Bell Salsa Con Queso Mild Cheese Dip recall.
