BMW may pay more than 70,000 Class Members $95 class action rebates, up to $900 for failed oil consumption tests, and offer thousands in credits under the terms of a settlement, according to court documents filed Friday.

Lead plaintiffs, Thomas Isley, Jeffery Quinn, Vipul Khanna, Walington Urena, Daniel Gulick, and Michael Henchy Jr urged a New Jersey court to approve the proposed settlement that would end a class action lawsuit alleging certain 2013-2019 BMW cars suffered from a defect that caused the excessive consumption of oil

Class Members include all current and former owners and lessees of the following BMW vehicles:

  • 2013-2019 BMW 650i/xi (TU1)
  • 2013-2018 BMW 650i/xi Convertible (TU1)
  • 2013-2017 BMW 650i/xi Coupe (TU1)
  • 2013-2015 BMW 750i/xi (TU1)
  • 2013-2015 BMW 750Li/LXi (TU1)
  • 2014-2016 BMW 550i/xi (TU1)
  • 2014-2018 BMW X5 (TU1)
  • 2015-2019 BMW X6 (TU1)

If approved, approximately 70,000 BMW owners may be able to take advantage of three benefit components outlined in the settlement agreement.

First, Class Members will be able to get two free quarts of oil, as well as an oil consumption test, for future oil changes at a BMW Center. If their vehicle fails the oil consumption test, the BMW Center will either repair or replace the engine for free or at a reduced cost depending on the mileage of the vehicle.

Under the BMW oil burning class action lawsuit, Class Members may be able to be reimbursed for the cost of up to four oil changes. Class Members can claim up to $95 each to cover oil change costs, according to settlement documents. Further, Class Members may be able to recover up to $900 for failed oil consumption tests and related repairs.

Class Members may also be able to claim either a $1,500 credit toward the purchase of a BMW 6 Series, 7 Series, X5, X6, or X7, or a $1000 credit toward the purchase of all other BMW vehicles.

If approved, the settlement agreement will end a class action lawsuit alleging certain BMW engines are plagued with an oil burning defect, similar to older models. Indeed, owners of older models of BMW vehicles may have been able to take part in an earlier settlement agreement; however, the automaker did not cover those who owned newer cars, claimed the plaintiffs.

“Plaintiffs’ goal here was to reach a deal that provided benefits to those BMW owners who suffered from the same oil issue…[t]he settlement benefits here do that,” state the court documents.

I have a 2014 BMW 750iXdrive that was using 2qts. every 1100-1200 miles initially. Took it in to BMW dealer and was told probably valve stems.
Had the test done. and submitted to BMW, then told they would put in new engine for l6K because of mileage. After thinking about offer, my
opinion is that they have very good lawyers and the offer is not very attractive. Like buying the same car a second time. The engine design was originally flawed and BMW offer is not very generous for owners. I’m having hard time staying loyal to the BMW brand.

Dealer is offering to pay 45% for Jew motor rather than repair valve stem ($1000 difference in repair cost) and give a 2 year warranty on new motor! This is ridiculous! My 2013 750li has 96,000 miles and I’m having to get a new motor and they are so confident in the redesign that they are only offering a two year warranty! I’m escalating to BMW America.

I own a 2013 BMW 750LI msport. Took the car to the dealer for a routine service and a couple days later they informed me that the engine seized on a text drive. For 2 months the dealer kept giving me excuses and let me have a loaner for reasons beyond me. I finally towed the car to another dealer and was told they found timing chain peices in the oil pan. I currently have a new engine I purchased in the car. I was told I could have a chance at a reimbursement for my new engine because of a class action lawsuit but I don’t know where to look for the info. Does anyone have any information for me?

Hi i am the owner of a BMW X5 2015 and the oil burns extremely fast. I also received a class action letter earlier in the year, however cannot find it. Please let me know my options. I am replacing oil constantly!

  9. Joel epstein says:

My 2011 alpina b7 with 68500 miles is burning 1 qt oil every 170 miles . Do I have any options?

  10. Amos Peterson says:

I just purchased 2013 BMW x5 50i in December and the within two weeks I had to put one in half pints of oil in my car every two weeks. I went to BMW they said my mileage was too high to stop the oil leak and that I needed a new engine. Which they said it’s the dealers responsibility. I’m Leaking oil every week now. I would like to join and be added in the class action lawsuit. It’s just not fair so many owners are having the same problem.
