Blue Buffalo Company Ltd., a natural pet food company, allegedly misled consumers by including a “True Blue Promise” label indicating the products contain no poultry byproduct meals; no corn, wheat or soy; and no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.

According to several Blue Buffalo class action lawsuits, investigations indicated that these ingredients were present in products with the “True Blue Promise” label.

The plaintiffs claim they paid a premium for products with the Blue Buffalo “True Blue Promise” label because they believed they had higher-quality ingredients than other competing pet food products.

Thirteen separate Blue Buffalo class action lawsuits were consolidated in Missouri federal court in October 2014 as In re: Blue Buffalo Company Ltd., Marketing and Sales Practices Litigation.

Nestle Purina PetCare Co. also sued Blue Buffalo over the alleged pet food mislabeling.

Blue Buffalo reportedly blamed a former ingredient supplier for misconduct that resulted in the mislabeled products. The pet food company noted that it would pursue claims against the supplier but agreed to pay $32 million to settle the Blue Buffalo class action lawsuit and provide compensation to disgruntled customers.

The Blue Buffalo class action settlement was approved on June 16, 2016, but finalization was held up by appeals. On July 5, 2017, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the class action settlement was fair and allowed the deal to become final.

Class Members of the Blue Buffalo settlement included anyone who purchased Blue Buffalo products in the United States between May 7, 2008 and Dec. 18, 2015.

Under the terms of the pet food mislabeling class action settlement, Blue Buffalo offered to pay $5 for every $50 in Blue Buffalo products a Class Member purchased. Class Members with proof of purchase could claim up to $200 while Class Members without proof of purchase were limited to a payment of $10.

More than 105,000 claims have been approved and checks were reportedly mailed on Jan. 8, 2018.

The deadline to file a claim for the Blue Buffalo pet food class action settlement passed on April 14, 2016.

I have been giving my two babies Blue Buffalo ? food since I had them as babies. My oldest since July of 2012, the other September 2014. Chewy is my main source of purchase. Today is Wednesday,May 20,2020.
Why didn’t anybody inform me of this lawsuit and even more importantly the bad ingredients? I will be returning the three bags I have for a full refund to Chewy. Is there any compensation for me and many others for being mislead all these years?

    1. Rachel says:

I’m sure after they got sued, they either fixed their ingredients or properly labeled the bags, so there’s probably no need for you to return the food or feel you were mislead in terms of this class action account.

      1. Stephanie says:

I’ve just read that the lawsuits doesn’t or hasn’t changed how they handle their food. My dog is currently in the hospital with renal failure after feeding him Blue Buffalo for 6 months.

  4. Kira Reisch says:

Like so many others, I never heard about this lawsuit, and have fed this too my dogs for the last 10 plus years. Where is Blue Buffalos responsibility in properly notifying its customers? I purchased almost all my dog food at either Pet Smart or Petco.

I can’t believe they couldn’t retrieve this information from their vendors. ?

I’ve lost 4 dogs from various ailments, cancer, mostly. Always believing I was providing the best possible care, in both nutrition and vet care. I’m incensed ?
More so because I adored my dogs and always thought I was providing the best for them. Only to learn I’ve been poisoning them ?!
I currently have a bag of their small dog chicken kibble and treats in my pantry!
Do we owners who are now just learning of this have any remaining options?

    Please let me know!

I too just learned about this today after reading about the simply nourish lawsuit. I fed blue to my dogs for 10 year before switching to simply nourish and and then I switched back to blue after simply nourish made my dogs incredibly I’ll. Just last year I switched to prescription diet because my dogs had become obese!

I’ve been feeding my dog Lily Blue Buffalo for 10 years. I just found out from a holistic pet store that she’s probably been taking her prescription for high protein in her urine from this god awful brand that I found out about today.

I also have used blue buffalo for over 12 +years and find out its caused a lot of our family their life’s. Frankie died of a young age and the blood work was of the chart from protein a d sodium. He was my son and bff. Always happy and to see him pass the way he did just killsme daily and my heart is still empty without him by my side 24/7 365!!! I took video so I could someday find the answers of all the pain we went thru and to this day my life is lost my heart is empty and think of him everyday.
To read the results of this company sickens me! And will stop feeding my fury kids this brand today!@! Wow is this y my kids r sluggish and never feeling good or living the way 2 year old pups should?

My Siberian Husky died from eating Blue Buffalo which we purchased from PetSmart.
On August 1st/2019 she came down with diabetes and got insulin twice daily but on August 11th/2019 she died.
We thought we were giving our dog the best dog food which in fact it was the worst.
I am so very sorry Kayla NaNook.

WHAT IF WE AS BLUE BUFFALO CONSUMERS WERE NOT EVEN GIVEN THE CHANCE TO FILE WEREN’T PROPERLY NOTIFIED , LIKE WE DESERVE OUR FAIR JUSTICE FOR OUR DOGS TOO, THEY SHOULD BE SUED FOR NOT PROPERLY NOTIFYING ALL THERE COSTUMERS WE BOUGHT FROM THE SAME PLACES FOR YEARS
