Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is facing new Nexium lawsuit from a Louisiana couple alleging major kidney damage.
The couple claims AstraZeneca failed to warn them against potential Nexium dangers which ultimately resulted in the wife sustaining permanent kidney damage.
Plaintiff couple Sharon L. and William L. are filing this Nexium lawsuit together alleging Sharon unexpectedly developed chronic kidney damage soon after taking the proton pump inhibitor (PPI). This medication was meant to help lower Sharon’s chances of heart burn and indigestion, but she allegedly suffered chronic health problems due to Nexium dangers.
According to the Nexium lawsuit, Sharon used the medication on a number of occasions between January 2002 and December 2012. At all times relevant, Sharon says she only used the drug for its intended purpose and followed all prescription instructions.
Even though Sharon used Nexium in a diligent manner, she claims she still developed severe chronic side effects as a result of the proton pump inhibitor. She also claims that as a result of ingesting Nexium, Sharon developed chronic kidney disease and was diagnosed in January 2016.
Overview of Nexium Dangers
Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) is one of AstraZeneca’s most popular products, with sales exceeding $5.7 billion dollars.
As mentioned before, Nexium is part of the proton pump inhibitors and is prescribed to millions of Americans per year. These medications work by inhibiting the body’s production of stomach acid, which reduces the effects of indigestion, heartburn and other conditions associated with gastric acid.
Even though this proton pump inhibitors are the most popular medications used for these treatment purposes, a number of patients have alleged serious kidney damage after not being warned against Nexium dangers.
For years, AstraZeneca and the FDA have received numerous reports of kidney damage in alleged association with Nexium dangers including:
- Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN)
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- Kidney failure
- Acute kidney injury (AKI)
- Clostridium difficile
The FDA officially warned against Nexium dangers in late 2014, noting that this medication may cause acute interstitial nephritis. The agency also called for Nexium’s warning label to include interstitial nephritis, as it often leads to kidney damage.
Nexium dangers and other proton pump inhibitors also came under scrutiny in a recent study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, which found patients taking PPIs had a 96% greater risk of developing kidney failure and a 28% increased risk of chronic kidney disease.
These medications were compared to patients taking H2 receptors blockers which showed significantly lower chances of kidney damage. Even though these Nexium dangers could be potentially deadly to patients, AstraZeneca allegedly failed to warn the public against them.
This Nexium lawsuit is filed in the United States District Court of Eastern Louisiana.
