A settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit alleging consumers with Green Dot prepaid debit cards and certain Green Dot-issued Walmart MoneyCards experienced a longer-than-anticipated service disruption, causing them to be unable to access their accounts.
If you had a Green Dot prepaid debit card or Walmart MoneyCard on May 14, 2016, you may be entitled to benefits from the Green Dot class action settlement.
According to the Green Dot MoneyCard class action lawsuit, technical issues occurred during a processor conversion, causing some holders of Green Dot prepaid debit cards and Walmart MoneyCards issued by Green Dot to experience a disruption in service from May 15, 2016 through May 22, 2016.
The service disruption was longer than expected and allegedly caused some consumers to be denied access to their accounts.
The Green Dot class action lawsuit alleges Green Dot entered into an agreement with MasterCard International Incorporated under which MasterCard became the new processing services provider for Green Dot. As part of this conversion process, Green Dot cardholders were informed that they would be unable to access their accounts for a 12-hour period beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern Time on May 14, 2016.
However, the service disruption allegedly caused some Green Dot cardholders to lose access to their accounts until May 22, 2016. Approximately 58,600 customers were reportedly affected by this longer-than-anticipated Green Dot service disruption.
“During the Service Disruption, Plaintiffs and Class members were unable to spend or withdraw their funds in their respective Green Dot Prepaid Card accounts needed for the basic necessities of life, such as food, clothing and shelter,” the Green Dot class action lawsuit alleges. During this Green Dot service disruption, some cardholders were allegedly unable to pay their household bills and incurred late fees.
The defendants deny the allegations but agreed to settle the Green Dot MoneyCard class action lawsuit to avoid the burden and expense of ongoing litigation.
Class Members who would like to object to or exclude themselves from the Green Dot MoneyCard class action settlement must do so no later than Sept. 26, 2017.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members of the Green Dot settlement include cardholders who attempted but were unable to use their Green Dot-issued MasterCard-processed cards to access their account funds between May 15, 2016 and May 22, 2016 because of the service disruption.

I reported Green Dot aka Walmart Moneycard to the FDIC over 4 months ago for costing me numerous late fees & overages & fees resulting in them declining charges that they supposedly suspect as being fraudulent yet it’s literally my Auto Payment setup thru T-Mobile each month & this is in the same amount no less each month as a reoccurring payment & Walmart has flagged only that transaction each month from being processed as possible fraud so they text me asking if it’s me every time. I am to say yes or no back which I say yes (proof of this) & each time they decline the transaction tell me ok go ahead & have em try it again. Well I can’t try it again cuz it’s auto payment that’s setup prior but T-Mobile has charged me late fees among other contractual fees now for 3 months straight this has happened so I’m paying these fees cuz if I do not I’m gonna have my cell number disconnected & it’ll destroy my credit. The FDIC forwarded my request to Green Dot who I called immediately upon hearing via email from them only to have them tell me they have to call me back and then proceeded to hang up one at 5 o’clock exactly since that’s end of business for them. Got an email about a week ago saying same crap that they are working to resolve my problem. Its now been almost 4 months no closer to getting that money back with no help from the FDIC which I thot that was their job to manage them which they made me do it by making me have to follow up with green dot. Both of them are guilty of not caring about it’s consumers but on one occasion one of the reps I was speaking to actuallyade a derogatory comment about my financial situation. Becuz most if not all ppl with a Walmart Moneycard are living with below poverty incomes to top it all off so they are essentially taking advantage of and discriminating against low income folks but targeting them knowing they can’t get another bank or bank card for their needs then using that to abuse their responsilities they should have when we trust them to hold our funds is against the law I thot in this country. But I’m pretty sure when they say “Good luck finding another bank!” to me cuz I was pretty upset I was out the money I had to pay TMobile in overages and all is actually discrimination no but doing so with that comment is unnacceptable period but that’s being treated differently cuz of my income and status which I thot the FDIC would care about it not so is the case. Fell on deaf ears.
