PPG Industries Inc. has reportedly agreed to pay $6.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit over claims that its Olympic Rescue It! products include design flaws that cause them to fail to adhere properly to decking, causing it to routinely peel, crack, bubble and cause damage to the material to which they are applied.
The original Olympic Rescue It class action lawsuit was filed in Ohio federal court in May 2015.
On April 26, the parties filed the proposed settlement agreement before U.S. District Judge Aaron Polster in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
The class action settlement documents state the parties have engaged in “extensive, arm’s-length negotiations regarding the settlement of claims involving the Rescue It! Product, including multiple in-person and telephonic conferences.”
The Olympic Rescue It products named in the PPG settlement include:
- Olympic RESCUE IT! Wood & Concrete Resurfacer
- Olympic RESCUE IT! Resurfacer + Sealant In One Moderate Restoration
- Olympic RESCUE IT! Resurfacer + Sealant In One Light Restoration
- Olympic RESCUE IT! MAX Resurfacer + Primer + Sealant
- Pittsburgh Paints & Stains Revitalize Wood & Concrete Resurfacer
- Pittsburgh Paints & Stains Revitalize Wood & Concrete Resurfacer
- Pittsburgh Paints & Stains Revitalize Resurfacer & Sealant In One Light Restoration
- Pittsburgh Paints & Stains Revitalize Resurfacer & Sealant In One Heavy To Moderate Restoration
PPG denies all of the allegations of fault, wrongdoing and liability claimed in the Olympic Rescue It class action lawsuit and maintains its products are not defective. However, the company has agreed to a class action settlement to avoid the burden and expense of ongoing litigation.
Class Members of the proposed Olympic Rescue It settlement include anyone in the United States who purchased one of the listed Rescue It products between Jan. 1, 2013 and April 26, 2017 and experienced a qualifying problem.
The Olympic Rescue It settlement offers the following benefits to eligible Class Members: reimbursement of the purchase price paid for a Rescue It product purchased during the Class Period; reimbursement of the cost paid to remove the Rescue It products; or reimbursement of the amount paid to replace decks or structures as the result of a qualifying problem.
The Settlement Administrator is not yet accepting claims for this proposed class action settlement, and the settlement has not yet been approved by a judge.

$6.5M Settlement Reached in Olympic Rescue It Class Action Lawsuit
when will I hear about the money coming to me? Is it settled? Is there any way to hear from you. Should we contact the court? What if any thing you can tell us?
I used rescue it on our back deck. Peeled so bad. An then had to clean that mess up. Spent $100.00’s of dollars. An ended up tearing the deck off An putting cement deck on. We worked so hard tryn to restore that deck
We applied Olmpic Restore it wasn’t a month before ours started peeling. Hours of hard work our deck is 21x 17 we spent over 700.00 . We are in the process of replacing our deck right now. Such a rip off!
Just tries to fill out the form and in the middle of the form was redirected to a spam site. I applied Pittsburgh revitalized and after 6 months it started flaking off. I have spent countless ours getting the deck prepared to redo again. I hope to get some money back! This is seems like a scam at this point.
Just would like everybody to know, I used Olympic stain for years, spent thousands of dollars buying their product, I restore old log cabins and now I wouldn’t even look at another can of stain with Olympic name on it, as a matter of fact, Lowes will stop carrying their product and hope all paint stores do the same, what a sorry bunch.
I also put in my claim at the end of 2017 with no information. Everyone else in the same boat?
I filled all the paper work and submitted all the proof, but have received any information back. Has this a dead end?
Sadly, I understand your poor typing
Went to PPG directly when Rescue Paint didn’t hold up for (I’d say) six months, Sent them pictures of the mess, and I was sent a letter for replacement paint. Needless to say, I didn’t use the paint because I didn’t want to go through the prep and cleaning like I did the first time. I’m in my sixties, and It was work and of course I was told they could not reimburse me for my labor. I believe wrong was admitted to at that point, I’m hoping they at least reimburse me for the paint because even though they (PPG) gave me a voucher for more of this paint, I’d been crazy to do it again. Got rid of it. And I got proof on my porch–It looks terrible!
Dear Chris, PPG is good and giving Us a voucher for More Defective Paint, How about Cash so We can change to a brand that won’t peel. They got Me twice and never offered Me anything but more defective Paint. I am going to try to find a Attorney that will stand up for Me.
please add me.
We did exactly what the instructions said to do to apply the paint. After six months the paint started peeling off. We have so much wood damage due to water. We are planning on getting a new deck. We contacted Lowes after the peeling and they said they would not be able to help us. We then stripped all the paint by hand…it took hours/days…..and re applied…….still did the same thing….peeled….and so many spots are compromised….now we have carpenter ants in those spots……so disappointing as we thought that this paint would hold up better. When we look under the deck……you can see so much moisture that is stuck in the wood. I don’t know how or if I can be added to the class action??….just wanted to share our story
