A recall has been ordered for defective Tesla touch screens

UPDATE: On Feb. 2, Tesla announced that it will recall all Model X and Model S vehicles with touchscreen issues, following pressure by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to recall the defective cars. There could be over 100,000 Model S and Model X vehicles affected by this recall.

In an email sent out to owners of the Model S and Model X vehicles Tesla stated:

Tesla has decided to voluntarily recall certain Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018 that are equipped with an 8GB embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) in the media control unit because the eMMC may malfunction due to accumulated wear.

On Jan. 13, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) sent a letter to Tesla asking the company to recall the vehicles after owners complained of touch screen glitches, according to Reuters, who first reported the recall.

The letter stated that the glitches posed a safety risk as they can cause backup cameras to go dark and defrosters to malfunction, decreasing the driver’s visibility in adverse weather and increasing the risk of a crash.

NHSTA wouldn’t comment beyond the letter, an unusual step that can signify eventual legal action, according to AP News. The letter may indicate that Tesla has refused the recall that NHSTA felt was necessary, prompting the start of a formal process.

Tesla is facing a recall for a defect in touch screens.

From data submitted by Tesla, the agency gathered more than 12,000 customer complaints, field reports, warranty claims and other claims related to the faulty screens. The NHTSA also determined that the failure rate of the screens were higher for vehicles that had previously been involved in recalls for similar issues.

NHTSA has been looking into the display issue since June. Tesla tried to fix the issue with numerous software updates, but NHTSA claims the updates weren’t sufficient.

“During our review of the data, Tesla provided confirmation that all units will inevitably fail given the memory device’s finite storage capacity,” Stephen Ridella, director of NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation, said in the letter.

TCA reached out to Tesla for comment on the recall and will update the story when we hear back.

Potentially defective screens are just the latest issue Tesla has been facing recently. Vehicle owners have reported a range of problems with the vehicles, and the company has issued a number of recalls.

In October 2020, the company recalled 30,000 vehicles in China over suspension issues.

A recent class action lawsuit claims that some Tesla batteries are defective and that the company deceived consumers about their capacity to avoid having to replace them under warranty.

I just recently purchased a 2016 model S in November. I’ve had multiple instances when my screen had need black for my entire trip and instances where both of my screens were black. Now when the smaller screen in front of the steering wheel is black… you’re doomed. You can’t see how fast you’re going…. you can’t see if you’re in park… drive or reverse and the gear shifter is so close to your steering wheel that it’s easy to just bump it. Ive filed.multiple warranty claims to have them come out and they say it’s “fixed” only to have the same thing happen again . Very frustrating because the price tag on these cars are are not cheap!
