Defective engine lifters: Who’s affected?
Have you owned or leased a 2021 Silverado or Sierra truck? You may be entitled to compensation for allegedly defective engine lifters.
If you have owned or leased a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado or 2021 GMC Sierra that made ticking and tapping noises, chances are it was a problem with the engine lifters and lifter rods.
Both trucks are made by General Motors and use the same kind of engine lifters,
small cylindrical parts in the engine block. The lifters transfer the movement of the camshaft to the pushrod or valves, opening and closing the engine’s intake and exhaust valves.
The lifters were updated the following year, but was your issue from the 2021 model timely resolved, and did you have to pay for it?

Signs of bad engine lifters
If your GM trucks have bad engine lifters, you may notice:
- Knocking noises when the car accelerates or takes sharp turns
- Vibrations
- Difficult acceleration
- Poor gas mileage
- Engine misfires
- Engine warning lights
You can still drive the car, but if you do you can expect serious, and seriously expensive, engine damage.
What was done about the issue?
Consumers have documented the issue online, like this one from a contributor to Trail Boss Chevy owners forum: “Defective lifter from the early ’21 models…affected a lot of truck, and those are the ones that are pretty much guaranteed to break — generally within the first 20k miles.”
Consumers say the company was aware of the problem and should have issued a recall. Instead, dealerships received a service bulletin from the manufacturer in late 2021 instructing them to make repairs to the vehicles before they were sold to customers.
People who already had the trucks may have had to replace one or more lifters — which can cost $1,000 to $2,500 — on top of the $30,000 to $60,000 they paid for the vehicle.
Eventually, some consumers received Power Component Coverage Letters offering extended warranties.
GM sold 529,765 Silverado trucks and 248,924 Sierras in 2021. Consumers do not find that a convincing reason when their safety is at stake. And it doesn’t speak well for this American car company that is making money but is said to be struggling with plans for the future.
