What is a Road Runner Sports Membership?

Road Runner Sports is a San Diego based company selling shoes and athletic apparel. Approximately 40 Road Runner Sports stores are in operation throughout the country, and the company also sells products and memberships through an online retail website.

What are the Allegations Against Road Runner Sports?

According to a report by the BBC, many customers of Road Runner Sports who signed up for a VIP Membership with the company were caught off guard when the membership automatically renewed and charged them fees.

According to other consumers, they were unaware that they had ever been signed up for the membership and only discovered these charges when they checked their bank statements. Other customers reported that it was difficult to cancel their membership. Many of these customers claim that they continued to be charged fees even after canceling their Road Runner Sports Membership.

According to customer complaints against Road Runner Sports and lodged with the Better Business Bureau, consumers may be assessed membership fees even if they haven’t been a customer of Road Runner Sports for years. Reportedly, one customer who filed a complaint on Aug. 12, 2019 wrote, “I have not shopped at Road Runner sports in 2+ years. I received a charge for $39.99 on my bank account. I contacted them on 7/24/19 advising that I want a refund as I do not have membership and haven’t shopped there in years.”

Customers who were signed up for a Road Runner Sports Membership and either did not realize they had been signed up for the program, were charged fees they were not aware of or had trouble canceling their membership may qualify to hire an attorney and launch an investigation or class action lawsuit regarding these memberships.

Are Auto-Renewal Fees Illegal?

While it is not against the law to charge auto-renewal membership fees, deceptive auto-renewal practices may violate consumer protection laws. These deceptive practices may include charging customers fees after the customer requested their membership to be canceled, not being clear about the associated fees when signing up a new customer for a membership, or charging auto-renewal fees without adequately informing the customer and obtaining their consent.

It is also against the law for companies to make canceling accounts or memberships difficult or impossible. There is some legal precedent for victims of deceptive auto-renewal charges to be able to collect compensation from the companies who perpetuate these practices.

Were You Charged After Canceling Your Road Runner Sports Membership?

If Road Runner failed to provide you with clear and conspicuous disclosures regarding automatic renewal charges before automatically renewing your membership, the company may have violated your legal rights and you may be eligible to hire an attorney and file a class action lawsuit against the company for charging deceptive or hidden fees. Customers who file lawsuits may be able to collect reimbursement and punitive damages.
