Vitamin D supplements study overview:

  • Who: The New England Journal of Medicine released a study on the usefulness of taking vitamin D supplements.
  • Why: The study determined it is not necessary for otherwise healthy adults to take daily vitamin D supplements.
  • Where: The study included participants from all 50 states in the United States.

Vitamin D supplements will not actually improve the health of individuals’ bones if they are an otherwise robust middle-aged or older adult without bone problems, a new study has found.

The study, published earlier this week by the The New England Journal of Medicine, found taking vitamin D3 supplements every day without calcium for more than five years did not reduce the likelihood of a wrist, hip or pelvic fracture.

A total of 25,871 men and women from all 50 states participated in the study and were given either a daily dose of vitamin D3 or a placebo pill, CNN reports

“Overall, the results from this large clinical trial do not support the use of vitamin D supplements to reduce fractures in generally healthy U.S. men and women,” study author Dr. Meryl LeBoff said in a statement

The results of the study do not apply to individuals who suffer from a severe deficiency of vitamin D nor to those who have low bone mass or osteoporosis, according to LeBoff.

Vitamin D helps human body absorb calcium, supports health

“This is a major public health problem in the U.S. One out of two women aged 50 and older will develop an osteoporosis-related fracture in their remaining lifetime,” LeBoff said in the statement.

Individuals who currently reside in a nursing home also can disregard the results of the study, LeBoff said, on account of their unique living situations.

“They may not get out to get sunlight exposure to their skin, which is a major source of activation of vitamin D,” she said.

The human body needs the vitamin to help it absorb calcium from the intestines, boost immune health and support brain cell activity and muscular functioning, CNN reported.

The National Institutes of Health recommends 15 micrograms of vitamin D for adults under the age of 70 in the U.S. with that number increasing to 20 micrograms for individuals over the age of 80.

In related vitamin news, earlier this month, consumers filed a pair of class action lawsuits against Nature Made, claiming the company deceptively markets its Nature Made Chewable Vitamin C products as “Extra Strength.”

Yes I do take Vit D, Dr said to but now they may not be helping? That is sad to hear and could be reason why my health has declined. I took for granted my good health in my younger years; I am only 67!

  7. Nicole Frizzell says:

I am 43 years old. I have so many y health problems from scoliosis to low blood pressure. I have cervical degeneration and tumors growing everywhere. My doctor told me awhile back I was vitamin d deficient. To this day nothing else was said and no additional tests were done. I had to do own research and maybe think my continued decline in health is from vitamin deficiency. I have history of liver disease …no treatment. I have either high or low BP..no treatment. I was refered to rheumatologist for testing positive for ANA. My vision is going and I have prolapse. Everything points to vitamin d. I’d like to sue my doctor for not treating my vitamin difiencency and causing prolong illness and further damage toy body. I also have masses groing in my breasts that were reported as “probably benign”. I have hyper hydrosis with a family history of it including 15 year old daughter who is showing signs of Illness already.
