Supply chain issues exacerbated by the pandemic are increasing consumer wait times for repairs and replacements of certain recalled products.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) claims staffing issues caused by the pandemic are partly to blame for throwing a wrench in supply chains, reports Milwaukee’s TMJ4 News.
Acquiring refunds has not been made more difficult, but consumers could have to wait several months to receive certain replacement parts, according to the federal agency.
Supply Chain Issues May Affect Recalled Children’s Products
The issue could affect a number of children’s products that were recalled in October, including, among other things, youth bikes and helmets, toy shaving kits, kids’ ATVs, and convertible child seats, according to Kids in Danger.
Nancy Cowles, the executive director of Kids in Danger, told TMJ4 News it could begin to take longer for companies to get their hands on replacement parts.
“If the fix is a new part, those companies might be having problems getting it, which would slow down the time before a consumer has a safe product,” Cowles said.
Kids in Danger is a non-profit which aims to inform consumers about product recalls that could affect a child’s safety.
Cowles says she is concerned consumers may be more likely to keep using unsafe products if they aren’t able to get a timely repair or replacement in the event of a recall.
“If they try and log on once, and there was no one in the company’s office, they may not get back to it and may just go on using that product,” Cowles told TMJ4 News.
Cowles added it is important for consumers to stay on top of recalls to ensure they aren’t using unsafe products.
“That’s the important thing to know about recalls. They’re not going to look broken,” Cowles told TMJ4 News. “They’re not going to look unsafe necessarily. It’s a hidden defect, often a design flaw.”
