Recall Check Overview:

  • Who: Consumers should be on the lookout for various recalled household products, including two items designed for kids.
  • Why: Costco shower benches, a kid’s stool, a bicycle part, and a toy shaving kit were all recalled by companies for posing serious safety hazards to consumers and their families.
  • Where: The recalls affect products sold throughout the United States.

Consumers should check their homes for various household products subject to a recall recently, including shower benches sold at Costco, a stool designed for kids sold on Amazon, a faulty bike part, and a children’s shaving kit.

Costco Shower Bench Recall Check

About 70,000 shower benches sold at Costco have been recalled because they can collapse during use, warned the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in a notice issued Thursday.

The recalled shower benches were sold exclusively at the popular warehouse retailer and are Made by Ivena brand. They are 20” tall, made of teak, and retailed for between $80 and $90.

“Consumers have reported 81 incidents of the shower benches collapsing, breaking during use, or falling apart, including four reports of people being injured in falls. The four injuries included a fractured tailbone, persistent head and body aches and bruising,” says the recall check notice.

The benches were sold at Costco between October 2018 and June 2021. Consumers can return the recalled products to Costco for a full refund.

Amazon Kids Stool Recall

StepUp Sidekick Learning Towers sold on Amazon were recalled because parts of the product can become loose, leading to falls and injuries, warned the CPSC in a notice issued earlier this month.

More than 1,500 of the kid’s stools were sold online in the United States and Canada. The recalled stools came with a white plastic exterior with a gray tray with two cup holders, seat and a step. The recall is limited to items with manufacturer codes 10-2020, 3-2021, and 5-2021 which can be found on the removable seat/step. Model number “4134” is molded into the bottom of the tower.

The stools retailed for around $100 and were sold online on Amazon and the Step2 website.

“Step2 has received 20 reports of the storage trays or steps coming loose from the tower, including one child sustaining minor bruises after falling from the tower,” warns the consumer protection agency in its recall check notice.

The CPSC says that consumers should stop using the recalled stool immediately and contact the manufacturer Step2 for a refund or credit.

Check Bikes for Skewer Subject to Recall

A bicycle part used to connect the bike to a cargo trailer can shear or bend, causing instability, says the CPSC in another recall check notice issued Thursday.

More than 3,000 of Ballz QR Skewers were sold in Canada and the United States by Burley as a part that connected the Coho XC Cargo Trailer to the bicycle. The recalled bike part was included in the trailer, which retailed for about $450, and sold at REI stores, other outdoor stores, and online.

Consumers are warned to stop using the part and contact Burley for a replacement.

Kids Shaving Kit Recalled for Hazardous Chemical

Janod Children’s Shaving Kits come with a trim that contains a chemical that can be dangerous if ingested, says the consumer protection agency in another recall warning.

“The brown trim of the shaving kit bags contains levels of a regulated phthalate that exceed the prohibition of specific phthalates. Banned phthalates are toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues,” states the notice.

More than 13,500 kits were sold for about $30 each at Nordstrom, Crate and Barrel, and Barnes and Noble, as well as online on Amazon and other retailer websites. It was sold between July 2020 through July 2021.

The kit comes with a blue fabric bag that includes mustache-shaped scissors, mirror, mustache-shaped comb, cologne bottle, shaving brush, shaving cream bottle and shaver. The bag is trimmed with brown fabric that was found to contain phthalates, says the CPSC.

Consumers are told to stop using the toy and to return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
