Dole Fresh Vegetables has recalled all of its Dole-branded and private label salads processed at two of its facilities and distributed across 23 states due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The more than 100 salad products were processed at Dole’s Bessemer City, North Carolina, and Yuma, Arizona, processing facilities, which have both temporarily suspended operations to conduct an extensive cleaning and sanitation protocol, the company says in a recall notice.

The decision to hold the recall and suspend operations was made after strains of listeria that have made 16 people sick since 2014 were found in two salad products — one from the Bessemer City facility and one from the Yuma facility. According to the recall notice, the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believe the salads are linked to the illnesses.

The brand names included in the recall are Ahold, Dole, Kroger, Lidl, Little Salad Bar, Marketside, Naturally Better, Nature’s Promise and Simply Nature.

The products were sent to Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Dole is urging consumers who have any of the products in their refrigerators not to consume them and to discard the products immediately. It says retailers have been advised to check store shelves and warehouse inventories to confirm that no recalled product is available for purchase.

Dole says none of its products produced in Springfield, Ohio, or Soledad, California, are affected by the voluntary recalls, and no other Dole products, including “ready-to-eat” salad products, fresh fruit and field-packed fresh vegetables, are part of the recalls.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems, the company says in the recall notice.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Just two weeks ago, Fresh Express had to recall certain varieties of its salad products over possible contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. The recall affects both Fresh Express branded and private label products originating from its facility in Streamwood, Illinois.
