Recall Alert: 2 Dead Amid 13-State Listeria Outbreak Linked to Salads Produced by Dole

Dole Packaged Salads Listeria Outbreak Recall Overview:

• Who: Health authorities are investigating a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to Dole packaged leafy greens. 
• Why: As of February 1, 2022, 17 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes had been reported from 13 states with two people dying.
• Where: The recalled products were sold across the United States and several provinces in Canada.

A listeria outbreak that has caused at least two deaths and 13 hospitalizations nationwide has been linked to Dole packaged leafy greens, and health authorities are warning consumers to get rid of the recalled packaged salads.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and state and local partners, said in a notice Feb. 1 that it is currently investigating a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to Dole packaged leafy greens.

According to the CDC, as of Feb. 1, 17 people had been infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes in 13 states spread across the country. Two people have died, and 13 have been hospitalized. 

“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and this outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses,” the CDC said. 

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Consumers Should Not Eat Recalled Salads, Instead Throw Away Or Return To Store

The potentially contaminated packaged salads were all produced by Dole but sold under multiple brands, including Ahold, Dole, HEB, Kroger, Lidl, Little Salad Bar, Marketside, Naturally Better, Nature’s Promise, President’s Choice and Simply Nature. 

The products include mixed greens, garden salads, Caesar kits and many other types of salads in bags or clamshells with “Best if used by” dates from 11/30/21 through 01/09/22.

The CDC is asking consumers to check their fridges. 

“Do not eat any recalled packaged salads,” it said. “Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.”

Anyone with the recalled salads should then follow these five steps to clean their fridge.

Illnesses started on dates ranging from Aug. 16, 2014, to Dec. 30, 2021.

On Jan.  7 this year, as a result of continued investigations, Dole issued a recall of additional products after detecting the presence of Listeria monocytogenes on equipment used in the harvesting of raw iceberg lettuce processed in the Dole Springfield, OH, and Soledad, CA, facilities. 

These products were shipped throughout the United States and several provinces in Canada. 

The FDA and CDC are also currently investigating a separate Listeria outbreak linked to packaged salads produced by Fresh Express.
