March vehicle recalls overview: 

  • Who: Nissan North America, Ford Motor Company, Hyundai Motor Company and Honda Motor Company initiated vehicle recalls during the month of March. 
  • Why: The automakers recalled the vehicles due to fire risks, unexpected vehicle shut-offs, defective brakes and defective seat belts.
  • Where: The vehicle recalls are nationwide.

Nissan, Ford, Hyundai and Honda initiated vehicle recalls during the month of March.

The automakers recalled the vehicles due to unexpected engine shutoffs, potentially defective brakes and seat belts and risks of fire. 

An automaker will choose to initiate a recall in the event a vehicle contains a potential defect that would make it unsafe for drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vehicles on the roadway. 

Nissan recalls vehicles over concerns they can accidentally be turned off

Nissan recalled more than 700,000 of its model year 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue and 2017- 2022 Nissan Rogue Sport vehicles last month.

It initiated the recall over concerns the vehicles are equipped with a defective jackknife key that could lead to drivers accidentally shutting them off while they are in use. 

“If the vehicle is driven with the key in the collapsed position, contact with the key fob by the driver could inadvertently turn the vehicle off while driving, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Nissan recall states. 

Nissan says it is figuring out how to remedy the issue, and, in the meantime, vehicle owners should avoid attaching any items to their key fob or using it in its “non-folding orientation.” 

Nissan began to notify dealers on Feb. 17 and vehicle owners in March, according to the Nissan recall. 

More than 1.28M Ford vehicles recalled over potentially defective brake jounce hoses 

Ford recalled more than 1.28 million of its model year 2013-2018 Ford Fusion and MKZ vehicles last month over concerns they were equipped with defective brake jounce hoses that can prematurely rupture. 

The automaker is concerned a premature rupture of the hoses could cause a brake fluid leak that would reduce the responsiveness of the vehicles’ brake pedals and increase the risk of a crash by slowing deceleration. 

Vehicle owners experiencing a brake fluid leak may notice a difference in the feel and travel of their brake pedals and their vehicle’s brake fluid indicator could potentially turn on, according to the Ford recall. 

Ford said it estimates a total of 2% of the 1.8 million recalled vehicles contain the defect. 

Honda recalls SUVs, light vehicles over seat belt defect concerns 

Honda initiated a recall for more than 448,000 of its SUVs and light vehicles last month over concerns they were manufactured with driver and front passenger seat belts that may not latch correctly

“The buckle channel surface coating may deteriorate over time, and the release button may shrink against the channel at low temperatures, increasing friction,” the Honda recall states.

The vehicles involved in the recall include Honda’s model year 2017-2020 Honda CR-V, 2018-2019 Honda Accord and Honda Accord Hybrid, 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, 2019-2020 Acura RDX and 2019 Honda Insight vehicles. 

Honda says it received 301 warranty claims about the issue from between March 2019 and January 2023 but is currently unaware of any injuries or deaths that would be connected to the recall. 

Hyundai issues pair of March auto recalls over fire risk concerns

Hyundai announced a pair of recalls last month over concerns some of its vehicles could pose a fire risk. 

The vehicle recalls included one that impacted more than 570,000 of Hyundai’s model year 2019-2023 Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Santa Fe Hybrid, 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid and Santa Cruz and 2022-2023 Kia Carnival vehicles.

Hyundai initiated the recall over concerns the vehicles were equipped with defective tow hitch harnesses containing circuit boards the automaker is concerned could suffer an electrical short and cause a fire. 

“An electrical short could increase the risk of a trailer tow hitch harness module fire while driving or while the vehicle is parked with the ignition off,” the Hyundai recall states.

Hyundai advised owners of the recalled vehicles to avoid parking them inside or near structures, until the automaker is able to fix the issue. 

The automaker also recalled more than 26,000 of its model year 2012-2013 Hyundai Velosters vehicles over concerns they were equipped with parking sensors that could short circuit and start a fire

Hyundai is concerned that a “high-conductive liquid” could leak into the recalled Velosters’ reverse parking sensor module, causing a short circuit that could present the subsequent fire risk. 

The automaker, which said it would be notifying impacted vehicle owners by April 29, has not received any reports of accidents or injuries in connection with the recall but had five reports of fires.

    2012 excellent condition well kept ford f150 engine shut off at random can’t fix happens then restarts spent thousands to no help on fuel system harness etc just randomly shuts off

      I have a 2017 ford escape the coolant fluid leaked into the cylinders which in turn went into the engine and the engine blew.

    I have a 2017 Lincoln Navigator Select. It has a crazy humming noise comings from the bottom of the vehicle. Took it to Ford for two major recalls and discovered that the hvac system under the front dash was a great fire hazard. Also, the brake system is faulty and leaking fluid. My vehicle has been at Ford Service now for going on three weeks and when I call for an update, no one will tell me the status of my repairs, condition or the vehicle. We could have been injured or killed while driving this vehicle. Or, injured someone else in an accident.
