Hyundai recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai urgently recalled more than 570,000 Santa Fe, Santa Cruz and Kia Carnival vehicles.
  • Why: The vehicles can catch fire while parked or driving.
  • Where: The Hyundai recall is active in the United States.

Hyundai Motor America urgently recalled more than 570,000 Santa Fe, Santa Cruz and Kia Carnival vehicles, as they can catch fire while parked or being driven.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the urgent fire risk notices March 17. The recall applies to 567,912 Hyundai 2019-2023 Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Santa Fe hybrid, 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid and Santa Cruz models. It also applies to 3,555 units of Kia Carnival vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2023. Hyundai is Kia’s parent company.

According to the recalls, some of the vehicles are equipped with tow hitch harnesses with circuit boards that can suffer an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

“An electrical short could increase the risk of a trailer tow hitch harness module fire while driving or while the vehicle is parked with the ignition off,” the Hyundai recall states.

Park away from structures, Hyundai recall says

Owners should park their vehicles outside and away from structures until they are fixed.

As an interim repair, dealers will inspect the tow hitch module and remove the fuse, if necessary, free of charge, the Hyundai recall states.

Once the final repair is available, dealers will install a new fuse and wire extension kit, also free of charge, the company says. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed in May 2023.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Meanwhile, a California federal judge recently approved a class action settlement to resolve claims that a defect in certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles can expose owners to the risk of sudden failure and vehicle fires.

on 6/15/23 My car catched fire while I was driving. I was lucky enough to get my mother, my dog and myself out of the car right before the flames took over. This is the most traumatic event I have ever encountered in my life. The distress, the trouble caused by this negligence from Kia, because now that I am aware of this top class action I can see that they have not made an effort to resolve the issue with thousands of people who bought and continue buying vehicles from there. DO NOT BUY HYUNDAI PLEASEEEEEE. Save your life and save the trouble.

I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata , which caught on fire with the ABS module . (RECALL) Hyundai expects me to replace my vehicle with $4000. Nothing for my time and trouble or even just because they jeopardize the safety of me and my daughter. Today $4000 is nothing when I had a vehicle that would’ve lasted me for several years with NO payment. And now I’m supposed to do all this running around for Hyundai sign this sign that that, notarize this notarize that. It’s my money, my time , and most of all, my safety, being jeopardized because of their negligence. They won’t give me my car back. My daughter was with me at the time of this incident and it was very traumatizing. F__k Hyundai !
