A Frito-Lay’s recall in December for a limited number of its Lay’s Classic potato chips has been upgraded to the highest risk level by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall was initiated over concerns the potato chips may contain undeclared milk ingredients and involves Lay’s Classic Potato Chips sold in 13 oz. bags with a Universal Product Code of 28400 31041, a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of Feb. 11, 2025, and manufacturing code 6462307xx or 6463307xx.

The recalled Lay’s potato chips were distributed to retail stores and e-commerce distributors in Oregon and Washington, according to the recall notice.

Recalled potato chips could cause life threatening allergic reaction, Lay’s says

The Lay’s potato chip recall is classified at the highest possible level, with the company warning individuals allergic or sensitive to milk could run the risk of a “serious or life threatening” allergic reaction.

The recall was upgraded to the most severe Class I designation on Jan. 27 by the FDA, reports NPR.

Frito-Lay said no other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are affected by the recall.

In other potato chip-related news, Old Lyme Gourmet agreed earlier this year to pay $4 million to resolve claims it falsely advertised its Deep River Snacks-branded chips as non-GMO.
