Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain Windshield Wipers Recall Overview:

  • Who: General Motors has recalled about 680,000 of its model year 2014-15 Chevrolet Equinox and 2014-15 GMC Terrain vehicles.
  • Why: GM initiated the recall over concerns the windshield wipers could become inoperable due to a manufacturing defect related to their ball joints.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

General Motors has recalled around 680,000 of its 2014-15 Chevrolet Equinox and 2014-15 GMC Terrain vehicles over concerns they contain defective windshield wipers.

GM initiated the recall after discovering the vehicles’ windshield wipers could become inoperable due to a possible separation of their ball joints from their sockets, according to a safety recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Mar. 17.

The issue is caused by the potential for “high corrosion and wear” on the ball joints in the windshield wiper modules, and could present a safety risk for drivers under certain operating conditions, according to GM.

“If one or both of the windshield wipers become inoperative, it could limit the driver’s visibility under certain operating conditions, which may increase the risk of a crash,” the recall report states.

The NHTSA opened an investigation into the windshield wipers on the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles in December 2019, according to the recall report.

GM To Replace Front Wiper Module, Reimburse For Repairs

GM says it will remedy the issue by replacing the front windshield wiper module and provide reimbursement to owners who already did their own repairs.

The replacement wiper that will be put on the vehicles was created with an “improved design,” according to the recall report.

GM says it began notifying dealers about the recall on Mar. 17, while it says it estimates it will begin informing drivers on May 2.

Drivers who are concerned and would like to get a rental vehicle before the remedy becomes available can do so if their vehicle is still within its relevant warranty coverage period, according to a recall document published by the NHTSA.

The recall is the second in as many months for a GMC Terrain vehicle with GM recalling more than 740,000 model year 2010-17 GMC Terrain vehicles in March over concerns related to glare coming from their lower head lamps.

Also last month, a class action lawsuit was filed against GM last month by four drivers who claim the auto manufacturer sells vehicles with exterior paint that is prone to flaking and peeling

I was driving to Tennessee from Kansas and was caught in a storm and wipers failed iniddle of it. Had to stay on side of road (3hrs) before I could drive again. Got to Tennessee and took to chevy dealer and replace wipers motor/transmission and was driving back to Kansas and went to clear windshield and broke again. Went to salvage yard snd bought another wiper motor because couldn’t afford 500 again and it worked and still is. Yes Got letter and was reimbursed for one of them. This year vehicle sucks. Have had issues since day I bought it
